To ensure Z-plus security for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, a contingent of 150 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel took charge of the RSS headquarters on Tuesday, replacing the State Reserve Police and the Quick Response Team.
Soon after the execution of 1993 blasts convict Yakub Memon, there were speculations about the security situation in the city.
The home ministry’s order of placing Z-plus security in Nagpur took time as there was a row regarding where the contingent would be housed. Initially, they were supposed to set up a base at Nagpur at the municipal school building located in the Untkhana area, about 3 km from the RSS headquarters, but later the school authorities rejected the plan.
The security staff will now be at the defunct Bhauji Daftari School in Mahal area, also close to the RSS headquarters.
Asked if there is any specific reason for the Z-plus security cover, a senior government official told The Indian Express, “No. The Z-plus security was being planned for a long time and had been delayed due to accommodation problems. Now that the problem has been solved, it is being duly installed.”
The RSS headquarters was the centre of a planned terror attack in 2006 when three alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) men had entered the building.
However, their plan to destroy the building, was stalled by policemen.
