THE MUMBAI Police Crime Branch has arrested four persons, including the driver of a black and yellow cab, for allegedly robbing app-based taxi drivers and making away with their vehicles. The gang of four persons was involved in at least four such cases of robbery where they attacked the drivers of the cabs and made away with their vehicles.
On March 2, the accused persons called an app-based cab near Sadanand Hotel at Crawford Market saying they wanted to go to Nerul. As they reached Palm Beach Road, one of the three accused asked the cabbie to stop the vehicle as he was unwell and wanted to vomit, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Atulchandra Kulkarni.
As soon as the driver stopped the vehicle, the four allegedly sprayed an eye irritant on his face and hit him.

They took the driver’s mobile and wallet, pushed him out and fled with the four-wheeler. A case was registered at Pydhonie police station.
When Unit 2 of the Crime Branch started probing into the matter, they found that similar cases had been registered at three other police stations, and realised that there was a gang using this modus operandi.
“The accused would destroy the Global Positioning Service (GPS)-enabled handsets installed in the app-based cabs. They would also use different mobile phones and SIM cards every time,” said K M M Prasanna, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime).
Eventually, a team comprising assistant police inspectors Santosh Kadam and Bhaskar Kadam manage to arrest one of the accused who then led them to three other culprits.
The arrested accused were identified as Sanjay Singh alias Pappu (39), a kaali-peeli taxi driver; Mohammad Dawood Shaikh (37), who briefly worked for an app based taxi; Imran Ansari (27), employed at a garment store and Mohammad Siddiqui (38), who helped them sell the four stolen vehicles in Dhule city.
