A 67-year-old man was injured after staircase of a foot overbridge (FOB) collapsed in Mumbai's Charni Road station on western line on Saturday. The collapse comes just weeks after a stampede at a FOB at Elphinstone Road station claimed lives of 23 people. Dindore Dixit sustained injuries on his left-hand wrist as the bridge collapsed. He was taken to the nearby Saifee hospital and his condition is normal. The reason for the collapse of the staircase is yet to be ascertained. More details in this regard are awaited. Following the Elphinston station stampede, as many as 40 new foot overbridges and 70 additional escalators at railway stations on both Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) have been proposed by the ten multi-disciplinary units that conducted the audit of 126 railway stations in the city over the last week. The audit conducted in the wake of the stampede on the orders of Railway Minister Piyush Goyal also recommended for increasing safety equipment at stations that include walkie-talkies, megaphones, more CCTV cameras, and installation of dividers inside the foot overbridges.
