DRI seizes Rs 2.6 cr in foreign currency from Jet crew member

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized undeclared foreign currency worth $3.9 lakh (around Rs 2.6 crore) from a crew member of Jet Airways on February 3, officials said Thursday.

“The crew member of Jet Airways was about to board a Hong Kong-bound flight from the Mumbai international airport,” said a DRI official. The official declined to divulge the name of the Jet Airways crew member, saying the probe was on.

On February 1, in a separate development, the Airport Intelligence Unit of Mumbai Customs intercepted another individual, Shaheed Mohammed, who was travelling to Dubai by a SpiceJet flight, and recovered Australian $8,350, 30,000 Euros, 3,500 Pounds and 15,300 UAE Dirhams — together worth Rs 31.82 lakh in Indian currency.

According to the customs, Mohammed concealed the notes in “one pocket of his laptop bag and also in pockets of his jeans and track pants kept in his checked in trolley bag”. Both Mohammed and the Jet Airways crew member have been arrested by the customs and the DRI, respectively.

In a statement, Jet Airways said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities in their investigation. “Jet Airways has a zero tolerance policy towards actions of employees that contravene local or international laws. This is clearly stipulated in employee contracts and reinforced in training sessions,” it said.
