Andheri: Man accuses wife of trying to poison children, police lodge FIR

While the police are interrogating the woman, Shaheen Shaikh, they have come across various contradictions that makes them believe that there could be ‘more to the case than what meets the eye’.

THE DN Nagar police have registered an FIR against a 27-year-old woman based on her estranged husband’s complaint for allegedly trying to poison her three sons. While the police are interrogating the woman, Shaheen Shaikh, they have come across various contradictions that makes them believe that there could be ‘more to the case than what meets the eye’.

The complainant, 35-year-old Mohammad Farooq Shaikh, a tailor by profession, had moved to the tenement at Hussain Chawl in Juhu galli along with his three sons aged 12, 8 and 6 years, nearly 10 days back. He had divorced Shaheen with whom he resided at Vile Parle prior to this, after he suspected she was having an extra-marital affair.

In his statement to the DN Nagar police, Shaikh said that around 10.30pm on Thursday night, Shaheen had come to his Juhu residence. He alleged that when he was away, the wife called the three sons outside and took them to have sugarcane juice from a vendor nearby. While the two younger sons just took a few sips of the juice and left it as it was too bitter, the elder son had two glasses of sugarcane juice, the complaint states. After coming home all three started feeling giddy after which Shaikh rushed them to the RN Cooper Hospital, where they were treated. The three siblings are out of danger at present.

Following this, the father approached the DN Nagar police station and alleged that his wife had added some poison in the sugarcane juice and tried to kill them.

An offence under section 328 of the Indian Penal Code that deals with causing harm by poisoning someone was registered against her by the police on Friday. The police then summoned Shaheen to the police station for questioning.

Dhanaji Nalawade, senior inspector of DN Nagar police station, said Shaheen has denied any role in the incident. The sugarcane juice seller has told the police he does not remember Shaheen coming to his stall on Thursday night. “So far there are several contradictions that have cropped up. We cannot be certain that Shaheen is behind the incident and hence have not placed her under formal arrest,” the senior inspector said. However, something seems fishy, the officer said.

Nalawade added that even the three children have given contradictory statements.

The police are now in the process of checking the CCTV footage of shops in the area to see if Shaheen had indeed taken the children to the sugarcane vendor. The police have also sent the stomach wash of the three children to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to find what caused the children’s health to deteriorate.
