Samajwadi Party leader, son ransack Dainik Jagran office after rape report

Riyasat Rana, who enjoys minister of state rank, later ‘tendered apology’.

A ruling Samajwadi Party leader who enjoys minister of state (MoS) rank in Uttar Pradesh, his son and about two dozen supporters allegedly vandalised the office of Hindi daily ‘Dainik Jagran’ in Shamli district Tuesday, officials said.

UP State Food and Essential Commodities Corporation Limited chairman Riyasat Rana, his son Bilal and others assaulted the peon and ransacked the office allegedly after the newspaper published a report about “a politician’s son had raped a minor girl for a year on pretext of marriage and forced her to undergo an abortion”.

The news report did not mention the names of Rana his sons or any other family member.

Dainik Jagran’s Kairana office in-charge Sanjay Chauhan lodged a case against Rana, Bilal and others at Kairana police station on charges of attempt to murder and rioting.

Later in the evening, Rana visited the newspaper’s bureau office in Shamli city and reportedly gave a written statement apologizing for the vandalism.

However, when contacted Wednesday, Rana claimed, “I was forced to write the apology letter”.

He also claimed that his opponents had got a false case of rape registered against him and his family members.

Chauhan, meanwhile, said, “Our office was attacked after the news of rape and abortion of a 14-year-old girl was published Tuesday. We had carried the report after an FIR was lodged into the matter. Rana along with his son and supporters came to our office looking for me around 11.30 am. Since I was not present, they assaulted the peon, Monu, and ransacked the office. They also threatened Monu that they will not spare me and other office staff if such report was published again”.

He further said that on Tuesday evening, “a man claiming to be sent by Riyasat Rana came to our office and handed me an apology letter. The letter stated that it was a mistake on their part and such incident would not be repeated”.

Dainik Jagran’s bureau chief of Shamli district, Ashwani Tripathi said: “Rana visited our office in Shamli city and gave an apology letter”.

The newspaper report stated that a minor girl has lodged a complaint at Kairana police station alleging that she was sexually harassed by son of a senior political leader. The news also carried the allegations made in complaint which stated that politician’s son raped her for about an year on pretext of marriage and when she got pregnant the youth, his father and other family members forced her to undergo an abortion. The girl had alleged that she was seven months pregnant at the time and the aborted foetus was buried.

The Kairana police have registered a complaint against Rana, his sons Samaryar and Bilal, wife Tahira and a daughter on charges of rape, criminal intimidation, causing miscarriage without woman’s consent and under Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act.

Circle Officer, Kairana area, Narendra Singh said that they have exhumed the foetus for DNA test.

When contacted, Cabinet minister and Samajwadi Party’s spokesperson Rajendra Chowdhary said, they have sought all information from local party unit.
