Lukewarm response to Bharat Bandh

Government establishments and offices were closed,but no untoward incident was reported in the state and the bandh passed off peacefully.

The bandh partially impacted life in Junglemahal. Banks,schools,post offices and government offices were shut. Commercial establishments downed shutters while vehicles stayed off roads in West Midnapore.

The picture was the same in Maoist-hit Binpur,Belpahari,Jamboni and Lalgarh police station areas,which are near the Jharkhand border,officials said. In Purulia,offices and shops were open but buses did not ply.

Trinamool Congress workers took out a procession in Raipur police station area to oppose the bandh. Shops were closed in Raipur,Ranibandh,Sarenga and Simplipal area in Bankura.

Subhendu Adhikari,MP,and Mukul Roy,Union minister and Trinamool general secretary,today held a public meeting at Bhatur village in Jamboni police station area where Kishenji was killed. The meeting,amid high security,included senior police officials such as Vineet Goyal,DIG,Midnapore range.

Governor M K Narayanan said,“The killing of one leader will not end the (Maoist) movement. We hope it will be a setback for the movement. Wait and see.” The former national security adviser was speaking on the sidelines of an event here today.
