Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay on Friday met Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to discuss “corruption within the police force”, fuelling speculation of fresh Assembly elections in the capital once again.
But, Upadhyay maintained that the meeting was held to discuss issues other than government formation.
During the meeting, Upadhyay urged the Lt-Governor to look into the matter of corruption in Delhi Police ranks. “Corruption in the Delhi Police is the first step of all corruption, especially on the ranks of SHO and below as they come in direct contact with the people.
If any person puts up a stall or builds a house, police is the first agency that he pays,” Upadhyay alleged.
Until now, it was the AAP that had taken up the issue of corruption in police. However, now that the BJP has decided to talk about the issue as well, several leaders see it as a sign of the capital going to polls again.
Upadhyay tried to put a cap on the speculation by claiming that tackling corruption in Delhi Police had been listed on the party manifesto for a long time. He added that the meeting was scheduled to discuss other issues such as salaries of teachers and the age-limit of guest teachers.
“A guest teacher gets Rs 7,000 per month, which is low even by standards of minimum wages. There has been no hike in the salary of these teachers for past 15 years since the Congress was in power. Approximately 18,000 posts of teachers are still lying vacant,” he said.
Water sharing between Delhi and Haryana was also discussed with the L-G.
