Transport minister Gopal Rai said the targeted number of extra buses that will ply during the odd-even scheme starting January 1, has been revised from 6,000 to 3,000.
“A report we received suggested that for most car owners, carpooling was their first option, the next being the Metro, followed by taking an auto-rickshaw. The last priority was the bus. For owners of two-wheelers, on the other hand, the first alternative was to take the bus…We had set the target of 6,000 buses keeping this in mind but two-wheelers have now been exempted from odd-even operations,” said Rai.
The government Sunday conducted a trial run of around 750 private buses which will ply during the odd-even experiment. Rai also extended the registration date for private buses to enroll with the Delhi Transport Corporation, which will ply under the ‘DTC Paryavaran Bus Sewa’ during the 15-day-trial period.
Visiting the BBM bus depot Sunday morning, Rai said the government was only 300 buses short of meeting the 3,000 target which it hoped to achieve by the end of the day.
Rai interacted with drivers and conductors deployed on the private buses who conducted the trial run. “We have engaged old conductors on these buses. If the driver is new, the conductor will help him with the route,” said Rai.
A driver and a conductor told Rai that since it was a private bus, not many people were aware that they could use it. Rai told DTC officials to display ‘Paryavaran Bus’ stickers of on the private buses. Officials said the buses will also bear a DTC logo and a sticker to inform people that DTC passes will be accepted on the bus.
