North civic body may pay Rs 5 lakh for dengue deaths

Over 5,500 dengue cases and six deaths were registered in the national capital last year, the south civic body states in its report.

With nearly hundred cases of dengue having come to light with one reported death, the standing committee of the North Municipal Corporation is considering a proposal offering a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of those who die of dengue in its area. The proposal has been sent to the municipal commissioner, officials said.

The proposal was made by a member of the Dengue and Malaria Committee. It states that the corporation should provide compensation for dengue deaths by granting aid to those victims who lived in areas under the jurisdiction of the civic body.

However, standing committee chairman Mohan Bhardwaj said that the proposal was not “very feasible” as any one could come forth with a dengue-related death certificate and lay a claim to the compensation. “We have not passed it yet, it has only been sent to the commissioner for his opinion,” Bhardwaj said.

Bhardwaj also said dengue deaths occur not just among those from Delhi but from patients coming from outside Delhi too. “We need to look into every aspect before passing the proposal,” he said.

Ninety-eight cases were reported in the national capital till September 27 — an increase of 30 per cent over the figure till September 20 — a report released by South Municipal Corporation, which compiles data for vector-borne disease, states.

The figures for dengue cases till September 27 — as per the corporation’s weekly dengue and malaria report — under the various civic corporations in Delhi are, 18 (north corporation), 39 (south corporation) and 13 (east corporation).

Fifteen cases were reported from areas of Delhi outside the jurisdiction of the three municipal corporations and 13 from neighbouring states, the report said.
