NGT imposes Rs 5,000 fine for polluting Yamuna
The petitioner had sought a ban on dumping of rubble into the Yamuna and ensure a clean-up of the river.

Expressing its concern over pollution of the Yamuna, the National Green Tribunal on Tuesday cracked the whip and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on individuals for throwing waste or religious items into the river.
The NGT bench also banned the dumping of construction material into the Yamuna while imposing a fine of Rs 50,000 on the violators. It also restrained real estate developers from carrying out any construction work on the floodplains under its ‘Mailey se Nirmal Yamuna Revitalisation Plan 2017’.
Previously, the tribunal had approved the recommendation of two committees that it had constituted with respect to restoration of the river’s health, its bank and storm water drains in Delhi.
The tribunal’s verdict came during a hearing on a petition filed by Manoj Kumar Mishra of the Yamuna Ji Abhiyan.
The petitioner had sought a ban on dumping of rubble into the Yamuna and ensure a clean-up of the river.
In January 2013, the NGT had banned dumping of debris, including construction material, into Yamuna and had directed the states of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh to remove the rubble immediately.
It had also directed Delhi Pollution Control Committee not to grant permission to any industrial unit discharging effluents directly or indirectly into the Yamuna.
