In Delhi dengue cases cross 12,500 mark, 32 dead

September alone has seen 6,775 cases — the highest in the last six years.

With nearly 1,850 fresh dengue cases reported in the last week, the total number of people diagnosed with the disease this year has mounted to 12,531.

Senior health department officials, however, said the incidence was going down, and would reduce further once temperatures dropped in the next few weeks.

Till October 17, the official death toll from the virus stood at 32. September alone has seen 6,775 cases — the highest in the last six years. South Delhi recorded the highest at 2,659, North Delhi at 2,638, while East Delhi posted the lowest with 1,551 cases. Until last week, North Delhi had reported the highest cases.

Of all civic zones, Najafgarh of the South municipal corporation recorded the highest number with 846 cases. Besides, 1,975 people who were diagnosed with dengue came from other states.

“The dengue outbreak this year is the worst since 1996, when 10,252 cases and 423 deaths were reported. In 2010, over 6,000 patients tested positive for dengue while less than 1,000 patients tested positive for dengue last year. In 2013, nearly 5,600 cases were diagnosed,” said an official. Till October 17, the number of houses found positive for mosquito-breeding stood at 2,22,732, while the number of those prosecuted in the same period was 21,493, as per the South municipal corporation report.
