A member of the CATS union said, “Three teams of the CRA, comprising three doctors each, were inspecting the medical equipment in the vehicles according to the prescribed guidelines Friday. Suddenly, at 2.40 pm, smoke started billowing out of the bonnet of one of the ambulances and then the vehicle burst into flames. Minutes later, another burst into flames. The fire services were called immediately. But by the time two fire engines reached the premises, the vehicles were gutted.”

The other ambulances were quickly moved while the two burnt vehicles remained in the IHBAS compound.

“It was an accident. Tata, the manufacturer, is investigating the case and we have also taken up the matter with them. They will replace the two vehicles because they came with a manufacturing defect. The fleet will be ready for Monday’s launch,” said the special project officer of CATS.

On Monday, Sisodia and Jain are scheduled to launch the ‘Free Emergency Ambulance Services’ scheme, which include a Modern CATS control room, new CATS ambulances and a new mobile application called ‘Call 102’. Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta and all 21 parliamentary secretaries in the AAP government are expected to attend the event.
