The Central Zonal Council meeting, which was to be attended by chief ministers of four states — Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh — and was to take place under chairmanship of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in Lucknow on August 29, has been postponed till further notice.

“The information about cancellation of the meeting came from Government of India, while we were making all the preparations. No new dates have been given and the meeting stands postponed till further notice,” said a senior UP government official.

Sources in the government said, the decision has been taken due to lack of consent from all the CMs for the set date, which was cleared by Rajnath and UP Chief Minister in the past. UP will be hosting the meeting, which aims at improving inter-state and Centre-state relationship, after a gap of 22 years. The last such meeting was hosted in 1992 by then Chief Minister Kalyan Singh.

During the UPA regime, most of the Central Zonal Council meetings as well as Zonal Standing Committee meetings took place in Delhi.
The states have been divided into five zones and each zone has its council comprising of Chief Minister, two ministers and Chief Secretary of each state as its members. The zonal councils are headed by Union Home Minister and each zone nominates one CM as its vice-chairman on the basis of rotation.
