In her first public event after joining the BJP four days ago, and with 19 days to go for the Delhi elections, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi’s message was clear: women’s security can be ensured only by effective policing, and that can happen only if the state and centre — the Chief Minister and Lieutenant-Governor — are on the same page.
Addressing a roadshow in the West Delhi suburbs of Rohini, the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate said, “If the same party is at the Centre and in the state, and the Lieutenant-Governor is also appointed by the same party. There is harmony and we can get a lot of work done. So vote for that stability because you the people of Delhi have suffered a lot.”
Her obvious reference was to the December 2012 gangrape, following which the then CM Sheila Dikshit had said she was not to blame because the Delhi Police reported to the L-G and the Home Ministry.” “If the CM and L-G keep fighting, there will be problems,” Bedi said.
Moving through the markets of sectors 7, 9 and 13 in Rohini, Bedi said she knew from experience that work could be done in Delhi, particularly by its police. “People say the police are not with Delhi, so nothing can be done about law and order or women’s security. This is not true. I have served as special secretary to the L-G. When Sahib Singh Verma was the CM, we did a lot of work,” she said.
Bedi also declared that she had entered politics because God told her to. “People ask me why I joined politics when I always said I wouldn’t. But this is my Delhi, it is our Delhi and thankfully God made me realise this is a way to extend the boundaries of my work in public service. This is not for the greed of any seat,” Bedi said.
Bedi began her speech by waving a large flag, reviving images of her days as a protester along with Anna Hazare, demanding the Janlokpal Bill . But the difference this time was apparent: she was holding a BJP flag, with the party symbol in the middle.
