Even as over two months have passed since the new terminal of the Chandigarh International Airport began its operations, the airport still lacks Wi-Fi and ATM facilities for passengers and visitors. Flight operations from the new terminal had begun on October 19 after it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September.

“That the airport has failed to install these services even after two months is very disappointing,” said Rajeev Kumar, a Mohali resident. “Everyone speaks of a digital India and it is very surprising that we have no internet facilities,” he told Sunday Newsline.

Many of the passengers believe that the airport has only a “label” of being an international airport. “How can you still say it is complete when you don’t have these important facilitates,” asked Gaurav Arora, a computer professional and Sector 23 resident. Officials from airlines too said they often receive complaints from passengers about the lack of such facilities. “They come to us and express their anger about such issues,” said a staff member of a private airliner. “We don’t have answers to their queries because we too are waiting for these facilities.”

Chief Executive Officer of the airport, Sunil Dutt, said they have called a tender for the ATM and added that they are hopeful that it would be installed soon. As for the Wi-Fi facilities, the CEO said that they are in talks with the government-run BSNL to provide the facility.

“I cannot give you an exact date for when we will provide the Wi-Fi services but we are working on it,” he said, adding that mobile connectivity has been improved at the airport.
