Partap Singh Bajwa: I have not resigned, nor have I been asked to

Sources in the party, however, said the exercise to rejig the state unit is under way and that a change of guard is imminent.

DISCREDITING all reports that the party has sought his resignation, Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa on Thursday said he had neither resigned nor had he been asked to put in his papers by the party high command.

Bajwa told The Indian Express that his meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi had been very cordial and that she had asked him about the state Congress’ preparedness for the 2017 elections. Bajwa added that he then gave her his plans to take up public issues through padyatras and protests.

Sources in the party, however, said the exercise to rejig the state unit is under way and that a change of guard is imminent. As part of the exercise, the high command summoned general secretary incharge, Shakeel Ahmad, who was in Chandigarh on Thursday to address a meeting of the Haryana Congress. He left for Delhi mid-way through the meeting.

Deputy leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, Capt Amarinder Singh, too has been called for the meeting in Delhi on Friday. He would be returning to Chandigarh on Thursday night to attend a rally at Dirba on Friday. He will head to Delhi after the Dirba rally.

With senior leader Ambika Soni’s name doing rounds as the front-runner for the state president post, a Malwa MLA loyal to her and close to Amarinder, said she has agreed to take the plunge in Punjab. It, however, remains to be seen if Amarinder accepts the proposal. Sources close to Amarinder said he had proposed the names of former party spokesperson Manish Tiwari and CLP leader Sunil Jakhar to take over here.

The Malwa MLA also said that Ambika Soni was averse to working with a general secretary incharge as she would like to report directly to the high command. She was not available for comments despite repeated attempts.

Shakeel, however, said it was too early to comment on the issue. “I am meeting certain people in the evening today. I should be able to say anything clearly by tomorrow afternoon,” he said.
