“Nek Chand has been a role model, both in character and talent, not only to people who knew him, but people across the world,” recollects Sandeep Sahni, who has been Nek Chand’s neighbour since many decades, with his family and Nek Chand among the first people to build their houses in Sector 27, Chandigarh.

The sector’s beauty and greenery are a gift by Nek Chand to all the residents here, who not only remember him, but also cherish his memories and artistic gifts. “Nek Chand always used to keep his surroundings and area of the locality very clean and well-maintained and inspired others around him to do the same,” remembers Sandeep. The workers at the Sehaj Safai Kendra of Sector 27, using ceramics and discarded objects have created pieces similar to Nek Chand’s art, a homage to the artist, his creativity and memory.

Sandeep says for many years, he did not know that Nek Chand was working on the Rock Garden and got to know about the place from someone who appreciated it a lot. “When we visited the Rock Garden, we were stunned to see the abundance of talent and hard work the artist had put in. Being our neighbour and beloved friend, we were so proud of his creation,” shares Rishi Sahni, adding that they used to think that the scrap and rags Nek Chand collected was a step towards keeping the surroundings clean. “But we were so astonished to see the end product, as his art was and is unique and distinct and no one could have done what he did without the focus and dedication he had towards his life and work,” add the brothers.

Describing their beloved friend as a humble and generous person, the brothers add that despite international acclaim and awards, he remained a simple, caring, carefree, happy and nature-loving person. “Instead of using his official car for important functions where he was a chief guest, Nek Chand used his cycle, like he once did at a function at the Tagore Theatre, where he was the guest of honour,” remembers Rishi, adding that Nek Chand was both passionate and respectful towards his art and his dedication is admirable.

The brothers have many creations by Nek Chand in their home. “We had to wait long before he gifted us some gorgeous sculptures and these are so precious to us. Every house in the locality has creations by Nek Chand and his presence is everywhere. His humility, simplicity and kindness are values we will always cherish.”
