Congress MLA demands shifting of Gandhinagar garbage dumping site away from Sabarmati

Congress MLA from Dariapur, Gayasuddin Sheikh, has demanded immediate shifting of the garbage dumping site of Gandhinagar on the bank of Sabarmati river. The site has become the cause of the river pollution and has led to the contamination of drinking water, supplied by French well of the Dudheshwar water distribution system to the areas in the Walled City.

He raised the issue with Ahmedabad Municipal corporation (AMC) commissioner, D. Thara, in a personal meeting that he had with her today. Drawing attention of the commissioner, he said that whenever the water from Dharoi dam was released into the Sabarmati or it rains, the garbage gets carried into the river. Sheikh said that this not only polluted the surface water but also the underground water around the French wells, that were used for supplying drinking water to Dariapur, Kalupur, Prem Darwaza and other areas of the old city.

The Congress MLA told the commissioner that contamination levels in the water supplied by French well had gone up at present, and that it was causing number of digestive and skin diseases among people of the area where this water was supplied.

Sheikh also informed the commissioner about water supply’s low pressure in these areas and its availability for shorter duration. He said that residents of the walled city were not getting adequate water for several weeks due to the low pressure. He suggested that even if the water supply was provided once a day, it should be given with enough pressure to ensure that it reached all the areas. The duration of water supply, he said, should not be less than one hour.
