Ahmedabad: Traffic police, AMC to study impact of heat on personnel
The study, to be conducted over a period of two months during summer, will analyse the impact of high temperature on the traffic personnel.
IN ORDER to evaluate the impact of heat and extreme weather conditions on traffic police personnel, the Ahmedabad traffic police department in collaboration with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will undertake a detailed study as part of AMC’s third annual heat action plan 2016 launched on Friday.
The study, to be conducted over a period of two months during summer, will analyse the impact of high temperature on the traffic personnel. For the study, 55 traffic personnel have been identified and briefed across various locations in the city. Apart from the impact, they would also be given awareness on ways to shield themselves from high summer temperatures.
Also, as announced by municipal commissioner D Thara and mayor Gautam Shah during the heat action plan launch, ten air pollution monitoring centres would be set up in Ahmedabad. This would be implemented with the support from System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR). The air quality and weather forecasting would also be displayed on LED display systems installed at these ten locations.
SAFAR, first launched in Delhi during 2010 Commonwealth Games, is jointly run by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the India Meteorology Department (IMD) and the forecasting model is running on a supercomputer in IITM called Aditya. At present, it is running in Mumbai, Delhi and Pune. Citing a decline in the number of heat wave deaths in the city, D Thara said, “With the heat action plan in place, we are able to reduce deaths by 80 per cent, especially among infants.”
