He said “Cases of ATM thefts have been rising in the state, hampering banking services and considering this during a state level security meeting of RBI officials, concerns had been expressed.”

He said that the gang was busted based on human intelligence, since the accused were not using phones or modes of electronic communication. He said that out of the 16 offences committed by the gang, the others probably settled with money they got during the burglaries.

However, the money they made by robbing the ATMs remained intact. According to Bhatt, the accused had at times run away when an ATM caught fire or the watchman had turned up. “In most of the cases they targeted the ATMs where guards were not present,” he said.
