The health department on Thursday launched a protocol treatment for tuberculosis (TB). A statement said that treatment of TB has become much easier with the new regimen protocol of fixed dose combination daily for six months instead of six tablets given earlier on alternate days. Dr Rakesh K Kashyap, Chandigarh Director Health Services (DHS), launched the protocol at the Government Multi Specialty Hospital (GMSH) in Sector 16 .

“He gave the first daily dose regimen to the TB patient and emphasised for early detection of TB and putting the sputum positive patients on treatment at the earliest,” the statement said, adding that DHS appreciated the efforts of the State TB Cell in generating awareness amongst masses, particularly in slums and urban slum areas which are more prone to TB.

Dr Rajiv Khaneja, state TB officer, Chandigarh, at the launch said earlier protocol was to give six tablets on alternate days and private practitioners used to prescribe daily dose. “Now the protocol has been revised by the Central TB Division, Government of India. One compact tablet which is FDC of four drugs will be given to TB patient on a daily basis. Private practitioners in the city will also get involved in the programme so that each and every TB patient can be detected and diagnosed for treatment at the earliest. The policy has been made by Union government that every TB patient will be notified online – nikshay website – by private and government sectors,” the statement said. Kashyap has launched the nutritional support scheme to MDR-TB patients by Rotary Club (Chandigarh midtown). The Rotary Club shall be providing nutritional diet to enlisted MDR-TB patients of Chandigarh, officials said.
