As it starts giving shape to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Skill India, the ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship is set to revise the National Skill Policy as it tries to go beyond the target of skilling 500 million Indians by 2022.
The policy, which was formulated by the labour ministry in 2009 to skill 500 million people under a standardised framework and in keeping with international norms and based on industry demands.
“We have initiated the process to revise the National Policy on Skill Development, 2009. Comments are being obtained from the various ministries of the government of India,” said Sarbananda Sonowal, minister of state (independent charge) for skill development, sports and youth affairs, adding that based on the comments the ministry will soon issue a draft policy.
The ministry is also working on rolling out the Skill India mission, said Sudhir Arora, secretary department of skill development.
