India vs Bangladesh, Bangladesh in India 2 Test Series 2024, 2nd Test - Live Commentary and Ball by Ball Updates

nd Innings India
Welcome back for Bangladesh's reply. The two umpires and players have made their way out to the middle. Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan will open the innings for Bangladesh. Jasprit Bumrah will start with the red cherry for India. Let's play...
... THIRD INNINGS ...
Right then, based on our estimations, we have 19 overs left in the day, but it's doubtful we will get through all of them. However, play can be extended by an additional 30 minutes if the light permits, allowing for a total of 45 minutes of play remaining today. The Bangladesh openers face a tough task ahead in negotiating this tricky phase before the close of play, while India will be hoping for early inroads. Back in a bit.
Though Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant fell in quick succession after Tea, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul ensured that the Indian innings did not lose momentum. After being given a couple of lives, Kohli fell just 3 runs short of his fifty, while Rahul continued to thrive. On their way to 285, India brought up the fastest team scores of 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 in Test cricket history, eventually ending with a lead of 52 runs. For Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan contributed with four wickets each.
With the fall of the wicket, the declaration has come from Rohit Sharma! It was quite an eventful 34.4 overs, during which India scored 285 runs at a remarkable rate of 8.22. The innings began with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma making their intentions clear as India raced to 50 runs in just 3 overs, the fastest by any team in Test cricket. This aggressive approach left Bangladesh stunned, unable to catch their breath as India maintained relentless momentum throughout their innings.

Mehidy Hasan to Akash Deep, OUT! CAUGHT! India declare the innings at 285/9 with a lead of 52 runs. This is flighted full, on off, Akash Deep winds up for a big hoist over long on but fails to get the desired distance on it. Hits it very high and gets it as far as long on where Khaled Ahmed settles under the ball and takes a very sharp catch around his shoulders.

Mehidy Hasan to Akash Deep, An appeal for caught behind but the umpire doesn't seem to be interested. Surprisingly Mehidy Hasan did not appeal and it was just Litton Das behind the stumps who seemed to have heard a nick. He convinces the skipper and Bangladesh send it upstairs. This is tossed up, outside off, Akash Deep gets low on a knee and looks for the big slog but misses. The ball goes through and Litton Das takes it low to his right. The UltraEdge shows no spike and the onfield call of NOT OUT stays.

Drinks break! A much-needed pause, especially for Bangladesh, who have struggled to regain control. Their fielding has been subpar, allowing several chances to slip by. India, on the other hand, have kept the pressure on, adding 81 runs in the 10 overs since Tea and now trail by just 14 runs. Najmul Hossain Shanto and his team will need to regroup during this break to stop the haemorrhaging of runs. The next phase will be crucial, as all eyes will be on how India approach the game once they surpass Bangladesh's total. During the drinks break, the 12th man Yash Dayal came out with a message from Rohit Sharma for the two batters, likely outlining the strategy for the remainder of the session.

Shakib Al Hasan to Shubman Gill, OUT! CAUGHT! Hasan Mahmud grabs the opportunity presented by Shubman Gill and India lose their third wicket! Shakib Al Hasan gets the better of the centurion from the previous Test. Tosses the ball up on the off stump and gets it to dip in front of the batter. Shubman Gill walks out for a big shot and tries to get it over long off. The ball spins away enough, resulting in Gill slicing it up in the air towards Hasan Mahmud at long off who takes a reverse cup catch near his face. Gill goes for 39 (36). Welcome back for the third and final session of Day 4. This will be a 2-hour session, but we do have the option of extending play by an extra 30 minutes, provided the light permits. There are 40 overs left to be bowled in the day. Najmul Hossain Shanto and his men are in a huddle near the ropes before taking their respective positions on the field. Khaled Ahmed will kick things off with the ball. Khaled to Gill first up. Away we go...
... DAY 4, SESSION 3 ...
With minimal help from the pitch, Bangladesh will need to maintain tight lines and lengths to keep the runs in check. However, with India’s attacking approach, it seems unlikely they will back off. Instead, they might push harder to strengthen their position, making for an exciting final session. Join us again at 9.30 am GMT for the concluding part of the day's play!
India’s openers, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, came out attacking, breaking the record for the fastest team fifty in Test cricket, reaching the milestone in just 18 balls. Mehidy Hasan’s introduction of spin paid off, as he removed Rohit Sharma, preventing a missed review from hurting Bangladesh. Jaiswal continued his aggressive innings, reaching his half-century with solid support from Shubman Gill before falling to Hasan Mahmud just before Tea.
Bangladesh’s batting fell apart quickly after Lunch, as India stuck to their plan. Starting the session at 205/6, Bangladesh collapsed to 233 all out. Jasprit Bumrah was pivotal, removing Mehidy Hasan, which led to the quick dismissal of the remaining batters. Mominul Haque fought alone for Bangladesh, staying unbeaten on 107, but got little support from the rest of the lineup.
SESSION SUMMARY - 24.2 overs, 166 runs and 6 wickets. Despite losing both openers, India will be satisfied with their position at Tea on Day 4, sitting comfortably at 138/2 after just 16 overs and trailing by just 95 more runs. The Indian bowlers executed their plan flawlessly to wrap up Bangladesh earlier in the session, and their aggressive approach with the bat has given them control.

st Innings Bangladesh
We are back! The umpires are out in the middle and are followed by the Bangladesh players spreading out in the field. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the openers walking out to bat for India! Hasan Mahmud has the new ball and will start the proceedings for Bangladesh! Away we go..
... SECOND INNINGS ...
India will now look to score big. It will be interesting to see if they try and play quickly. The pitch seems a good one to bat on and India would be eager to make full use of it. Bangladesh on the other hand, will need quick wickets if they are to get back in the game. Reply in a bit.
For Bangladesh, Mominul Haque fought a long battle. The rest just gave their wickets away. The shots played by Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan were quite disappointing from Bangladesh's perspective. The wicket doesn’t have a lot of demons and Bangladesh should be disappointed with their effort.
Well, it took India just under 50 minutes after Lunch to wrap up the innings. A job well done for the hosts as the visitors slipped from 224/6 to be bowled out for 233. It was a combined bowling effort with all the bowlers used getting a wicket at least. On Day 4 though, it was Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin who did the majority of the damage. India will be quite pleased with their performance with the ball.

Ravindra Jadeja to Khaled Ahmed, OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! 300 TEST WICKETS FOR JADEJA! The softest of dismissals and Bangladesh are bowled out for 233. Indians erupt in celebration, gathering around Jadeja to applaud his remarkable milestone. This is tossed up full, on middle and off by Jadeja and he gets the ball to grip and turn away, Khaled Ahmed tries to play it across the line and closes the bat face a bit too early. A leading edge is found and the ball balloons behind to the left of the bowler. Jadeja moves across quickly and grabs a simple catch over his left shoulder. Jadeja becomes the third Indian after Kapil Dev and Ravichandran Ashwin to achieve the double of scoring 3000 runs and taking 300 wickets in Test cricket.

... DAY 4, SESSION 2 ...
The pitch has not shown any visible gremlins, proving good for batting. However, the Bangladeshi batters have not displayed enough patience, which has been a recurring theme throughout the series in terms of their batting. Mominul, who has maintained a solid tempo to his innings, will need to demonstrate the required patience, as will Mehidy if they are to keep the Indian bowlers at bay. With only the tail to follow, the hosts will be hoping to strike early after Lunch and open up one end. Do join us back at 6.55 am GMT for the start of the second session, which will also be an extended one.
Mominul Haque picked up where he left off on the opening day and looked assured. Litton Das also looked confident until he went for a big shot, only to be caught by a one-handed stunner from Rohit Sharma. Das' decision to attack seemed influenced by the close-in fielders placed right in his line of vision. Lightning struck twice as it was then time for Mohammed Siraj to pull off a spectacular catch to see the back of Shakib Al Hasan, who, like Das, tried to go for a big shot. Mominul then joined forces with Mehidy Hasan to prevent any further casualties before Lunch. In the final over before the break, Mominul celebrated reaching his 13th Test century, his first in India and the second away from home.
End of an entertaining session! The Indian players gather around Mominul Haque to congratulate him for his remarkable effort as both teams walk off for Lunch. Mominul receives a standing ovation from his teammates, and this has been a knock he will remember for a long time. During this extended session, Bangladesh scored 98 runs while losing 3 wickets in the 31 overs bowled. From the start, there wasn’t much assistance for the Indian pacers, making it crucial for them to maintain tight lines early on, which they did. Jasprit Bumrah managed to generate just enough movement to dismiss Mushfiqur Rahim while he attempted to leave the ball.

Ravichandran Ashwin to Shakib Al Hasan, OUT! TAKEN! That's a seriously good catch! Second excellent catch from India today. This is probably better than the first one. Ashwin comes on and strikes. Excellent bowling change. However, that shot was a poor one from Shakib. Not sure if he needed to play another one after getting a boundary the ball before. He steps out. Ashwin slows it up and drags his length back a touch. Shakib looks to go over mid off but is through the shot early. It goes off the toe end towards mid off. Siraj backtracks, he seems to have misjudged it but then leaps and takes it behind his head and tumbles over as the ball sticks in his left hand. Shakib falls for 9 (17). Bangladesh are now 170/6.

Drinks! India have maintained it tight from the outset, but Bangladesh have been exceptional so far. Despite losing Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das has seamlessly stepped in, getting off to a confident start alongside Mominul Haque, who is growing in confidence with each passing over. Rohit Sharma will be eager to break this partnership, but at the moment, the pitch isn’t offering much assistance to trouble the batters. Bangladesh will be looking to capitalize on this steady momentum.

Gets beaten on the inside edge and it lobs to Yashasvi Jaiswal at a deepish short leg who takes it low, moving away to his right. The finger goes up but Mominul Haque reviews it straight away. Has this come off his thigh pad? The first replay does seem to suggest so and it is confirmed by the UltraEdge. The third umpire wants to confirm whether it has come off the gloves after it lobbed off the thigh pad. It has made no contact with the glove and the on-field decision will have to be overturned.

We’re finally back in action after more than two days, and the excitement is palpable! The umpires are making their way to the middle, followed by the Indian players who are eagerly spreading out across the field, ready to get things underway once again. Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim are set to resume their stay at the crease, facing the crucial task of navigating through the early stages of this restart. Akash Deep is handed the ball and is set to start Day 4! Away we go..
Jasprit Bumrah is in for a chat. He says that the weather is not in anyone's control and it is the way it is. Shares that they had a good couple of relaxing days. Feels that it is important to quickly adjust to the changing conditions here in Kanpur after Chennai and communicate with others in terms of changing lines and lengths. Mentions that his favourite format is Test cricket and he always tries to give his absolute best in this format. States that it is about being smart while trying to stay fit for the series against Australia and get a good number of overs under the belt here.
PITCH REPORT - Murali Kartik is joined by Athar Ali Khan near the deck. Kartik says there was dampness in the pitch yesterday with the pitch being under covers but with the sun baking the surface it shouldn't be an issue. Athar says the pitch has dried out but is still good for batting. Suggests that the first session will favour the bowlers but eventually will stay good for batting.
UPDATE - 3.36 am GMT - Great news! Play is set to commence at 4 am GMT. Here are the revised session timings for the day. The first session will run from 4 am GMT to 6.15 am GMT, followed by the second session, which will commence at 6.55 am GMT and continue until 9.10 am GMT. The third and final session of the day will start at 9.30 am GMT and conclude at 11.30 am GMT. We have 98 overs scheduled to be bowled today with the option to extend play by 30 minutes after 11.30 am GMT, subject to light conditions.
UPDATE - 3.13 am GMT - A pleasing sight to kick things off! It’s bright and sunny in Kanpur, and we’re hopeful for a prompt start to the day’s play. The match officials are carrying out an inspection as we speak, closely examining the areas near the fence that were a point of concern on Day 3. More promising signs as both teams are about to begin their warm-ups. Fingers crossed for a full day of action!
The chances of a result remain slim, and with time running out, both teams will be hoping for extended spells of play to salvage whatever they can from this rain-hit Test. The conditions haven't allowed the usual 4 am GMT start for the past two days, let alone an early start, leaving everyone hopeful for better fortunes today. Stick around as we await the start of play.
The opening day saw a delayed start, but only 35 overs were bowled before play was cut short due to bad light and subsequent rain. Day 2 was washed out entirely by persistent drizzle, and in a twist of irony, 'Moving Day' turned into a standstill as a wet outfield meant no play was possible on Day 3. With six sessions left, the forecast for today and tomorrow looks promising, but it all hinges on whether the outfield has recovered in time.
Hello and a warm welcome, folks! It's Day 4 of the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Green Park in Kanpur. Normally, by Day 4, the narrative of a Test match is either nearing its conclusion, tilting toward one side, or locked in a tense battle of Even Stevens. But here in Kanpur, none of those scenarios have played out with only 35 overs of play possible so far.
... DAY 4, SESSION 1 ...
That said, we’ll be back for Day 4, which promises to be much better according to the forecast. While the first three days have been gloomy, the positive news is that the upcoming two days are expected to offer clearer skies, potentially allowing for a full day of play. With six sessions left and only 35 overs completed so far, it will be challenging for either team to push for a result, but certainly not impossible. We may also see early starts to the remaining days to make up for the lost time. As always, you can join us well in advance as we build up to the action on Day 4 of this second Test match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
Unfortunately, it's not the outcome we were hoping for, but STUMPS have been called on Day 3 as well. It's a frustrating end to another day, marking two consecutive days lost without a single ball being bowled. Despite there being no rain since early morning, the soggy outfield from the previous day's downpour ultimately led the umpires to deem it unsafe for the players to take the field. While the decision is undoubtedly the right call for player safety, it’s still a disappointing and disheartening blow for the fans.
UPDATE - 8.30 am GMT - Time for Round 3! Familiar scenes as the two umpires head out to the centre, and they’re greeted by a special guest. Look who's here! The sun has finally made an appearance in Kanpur for the first time in two days. Oh dear, though! Tamim Iqbal, on air, informs us that he spoke to the manager of the Bangladesh team, who mentioned that the play has been called off for the day. However, we're still waiting for the official word. Stay tuned!
As the minutes tick by, it’s becoming increasingly evident that Shakib Al Hasan is nearing the twilight of his remarkable Test career. With the next series against South Africa still awaiting security clearance amid the unrest in Bangladesh, this could potentially be his final match in whites. The remainder of this Test holds immense significance for him, and fans will be eager to see him take the field once more, ideally not for the last time - so he can relish every moment of his storied journey.
With this emphatic win, Sri Lanka have strengthened their chances of making their first World Test Championship final. Their point percentage now stands at 55.56, consolidating their third position in the standings. Sri Lanka will next tour South Africa for two Tests later in the year, followed by a home series against Australia in early 2025. New Zealand, on the other hand, have dropped from fourth to seventh in the table. Their next challenge will be a three-match series in India, a tough test for Tim Southee and his men after this disappointing tour.
Back to men's cricket, down in Galle, Sri Lanka have completed a resounding victory over New Zealand, completing a clean sweep in the Test series. After being bowled out for just 88 in their first innings, it initially looked like a three-day finish was imminent, particularly given how the Kiwi batters struggled against spin. However, New Zealand displayed much better application in their second innings, managing to stretch the game into the second session today. Despite their efforts, the writing was on the wall, and Sri Lanka's dominance ultimately shone through as they secured a convincing win by an innings and 154 runs.
While Australia and England gear up for their ODI series decider in Bristol, the women from the two nations are set to clash in one of three warm-up games scheduled for today at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup. Heather Knight and Co. have been in the UAE for over three weeks, preparing through a training camp ahead of the tournament. Meanwhile, Australia recently hosted New Zealand, inflicting a whitewash over their Trans-Tasman rivals in the T20I series. Speaking of New Zealand, they are set to face South Africa, while India will take on the West Indies in another warm-up match. These games will be pivotal for the teams as they look to build momentum ahead of the competition.
In other news, the ICC Women's T20 World Cup warm-up games are underway, and there has already been a major upset with Scotland stunning Pakistan with a comprehensive victory. Kathryn Bryce led the charge with the ball, helping restrict Pakistan to 132 runs, while her sister Sarah Bryce, supported by Saskia Horley, guided Scotland to victory with 8 wickets in hand and 2 overs to spare. In the other game, Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by 33 runs. A solid partnership between Nilakshi de Silva and Hasini Perera helped Sri Lanka post a total of 143 runs, which was defended through a collective bowling effort, spearheaded by Sugandika Kumari and Inoshi Priyadharshani.
UPDATE - 6.40 am GMT - Argh! We are going to have another inspection at 8.30 am GMT! The match officials are still not satisfied with what they observed during the inspection and believe that more time is needed for the outfield to dry out. With no sign of the sun making an appearance, it complicates matters further. As much as we want the action to commence, the safety of players is paramount, and the match officials are prioritizing that. The wait continues!
UPDATE - 6.30 am GMT - It’s time for the second official inspection of the day! Live visuals show the fourth umpire alongside Chris Brown and Richard Kettleborough closely examining the conditions. They still seem a bit concerned about the damp patches in the outfield. When poked into the turf, the shoes are still going in, indicating that the ground remains soft underneath. Abhinav Mukund, on air, reckons that the run-up areas could also be a point of concern. Saba Karim chimes in, suggesting that we might need another inspection after this one. The match officials have conveyed their observations and the further course of action to the representatives of the two teams who accompanied them during the inspection. We should have an update soon!
UPDATE - 6.09 am GMT - With just over 20 minutes to go until the scheduled inspection, LUNCH has officially been taken, meaning we have lost yet another session in the Test. The silver lining? There hasn’t been any rain since early morning. Let’s hope it stays that way as we await some good news soon!
But that’s not all! The stage is set for an epic showdown between old rivals England and Australia in the ODI series decider in Bristol. After being down 0-2 in the series, England have staged a remarkable comeback to set up this thrilling finale. With the weather looking a bit dicey, let’s hope it holds up for what promises to be an exhilarating encounter. If you weren’t aware, the T20I series had to be shared due to inclement weather in the decider, so fingers crossed we won’t see a repeat in the ODI series!
And did we mention it’s Super Sunday? You might be wondering why - it’s because an action-packed day of cricket is upon us! Not only do we have the two Tests in the Asian subcontinent, but down in the UAE, South Africa and Ireland are gearing up to clash in the second and final T20I of their series. Having claimed victory in the opener, the Proteas are eyeing a clean sweep, while Ireland will be fighting tooth and nail to end the series on level terms.
Meanwhile, in Galle, Sri Lanka are just four wickets away from inflicting a heavy defeat on New Zealand in the second Test and completing a clean sweep. After Sri Lanka posted 602 in their first innings, the Kiwis were bowled out for just 88. While following on, they have shown some improvement in their second innings but still face a daunting challenge to avoid a heavy defeat with Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner currently battling it out for them. You can switch tabs and follow the action on what is truly a Super Sunday.
While we await the next inspection, here are a few more updates on the advancements in the Indian T20 League’s Mega Auction Retention Rules for the 2025-27 cycle. A match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game has been introduced for the first time, which will be paid in addition to the contracted amount. In a more stringent change, all overseas players must register for the Mega Auction, and failure to do so will make them ineligible for the following year’s player auction. Furthermore, if a player who has registered and been picked in the auction withdraws before the start of the season, they will face a two-season ban from participating in both the tournament and the player auctions. Lastly, the Impact Player rule will continue in this cycle as well.
UPDATE - 4.42 am GMT - Oh no! This isn't the news we were hoping for. The match officials are not satisfied with the conditions just yet, and the soggy patches in the outfield need more work. They have decided to hold another inspection at 6.30 am GMT. With the skies remaining overcast and the sun not making an appearance, it certainly complicates things. We'll have to wait a bit longer to see when play can resume, but let’s keep our fingers crossed for improved conditions before the next inspection!
While we await an update regarding the inspection, Murali Kartik and Athar Ali Khan are out in the middle to provide insights on the conditions. They start by saying that there are a few soggy patches in the outfield and there is no sunlight, which could help dry them. They move towards the playing surface and say that the pitch being under covers for so long will have a lot of underlying moisture, which could favour the Indian bowlers. Athar Ali Khan mentions that the bowlers will want to pitch it up and tempt the batters to come on the front foot.
UPDATE - 4.30 am GMT - The moment of truth has arrived! The two on-field umpires, alongside the fourth umpire, are currently inspecting the outfield. They appear somewhat concerned about certain areas, as they poke their shoes into the turf to assess the condition of the outfield. The head groundsman has joined them as they examine the areas near the fence, which have been sprayed with sand to help with the drying process. Fingers crossed for a positive update!
On Saturday, the Indian T20 League announced its updated Mega Auction Retention Rules, introducing several significant changes and procedures. One of the key updates is that teams can now retain a maximum of six players through retention or the Right to Match (RTM) card, which can include up to five capped and two uncapped players. In an exciting twist, any capped Indian player who has not played international cricket or held a BCCI central contract in the last five years will be considered uncapped. Additionally, the auction purse for each team has been increased to 120 crores INR, further raising the stakes for the upcoming auction.
UPDATE - 3.57 am GMT - The main cover has been removed, and the strip is now uncovered. However, it remains overcast, and the sun has yet to make an appearance. A couple of Super Soppers are actively working on the outfield. We are just over 30 minutes away from the scheduled inspection, and let's hope that the outfield is in good shape for play to resume soon. The stumps have been erected, which is a positive sign, as the fourth umpire, Virender Sharma, keeps a close eye on the efforts of the ground staff.
In case you missed it, on Saturday, India announced their 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. One of the major talking points was the maiden call-up for speedster Mayank Yadav, who impressed with his raw pace during the 2024 Indian T20 League. Promising all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy also earned a spot, while mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy returns to the Indian setup for the first time since 2021. Chakaravarthy's recall comes on the back of his stellar performances for Kolkata in the Indian T20 League, where he finished as the leading wicket-taker for the champion side. Notably, none of the players from the current Test squad will feature in the T20I series, with Suryakumar Yadav leading a fresh-looking squad. The series kicks off with the first T20I in Gwalior on 6th October.
UPDATE - 3.31 am GMT - Good early signs! It is currently not raining, and the covers are being peeled off. While the square is still covered, the rest of the covers have been removed. The match officials are out there inspecting the outfield and assessing the conditions. It looks promising, but we still need to see how quickly the ground can be prepared for play. An inspection has been scheduled for 4.30 am GMT, so we are set for a delayed start. Fingers crossed for some action soon!
With significant overs lost across both days, it's likely play will begin 30 minutes earlier, weather permitting. Fortunately, today’s weather looks far more promising than on Day 2, raising hopes of seeing a full day’s action. Stay tuned for more updates as we anticipate a potentially pivotal day of cricket!
On the other hand, Bangladesh won’t deviate from their approach on Day 1, looking to take things steady and display their grit and resilience. Mominul Haque, who was well set before play was cut short, will need to restart his innings and anchor the effort, relying on strong support from the rest of the batting unit. However, the pitch, having been under covers for over a day, might behave unpredictably, though only time will reveal its true nature. Bangladesh will need to reset and brace themselves for India’s fierce bowling attack.
India will undoubtedly be more desperate to get back on the field, holding a slight advantage after just 35 overs of play so far. With the home leg offering a strong chance to grab crucial points, they’ll be keen to avoid a situation where points are shared due to the weather, which has already disrupted much of the match. It’s certain that once they get back on the field, they’ll push hard and look to accelerate the game, knowing there are only 9 sessions left to force a result.
Hello and welcome back to Day 3 of this second Test match between India and Bangladesh, coming to you from Green Park in Kanpur. The weather hasn't been on our side for the first two days, but we're optimistic for a full day of play today. With time now a crucial factor for both teams, every session will be pivotal as they look to push for a result.
... DAY 3, SESSION 1 ...
That wraps up another rain-affected day, with the entire Day 2 lost to the weather. The forecast for Day 3, September 29th, is far more promising, and we remain hopeful for a full day of play, giving this Test enough time for all possible outcomes. Even though today's play has been called off, let's hope the conditions improve in time for a full day of action on Day 3. Given that we have lost an entire day's play, we are likely to see early starts for the remainder of the Test. You can join us well ahead of time as we build up to what could be an exciting day of Test cricket. Until then, goodbye and cheers!
Well, the inevitable news has arrived, STUMPS have been called for Day 2 without a single ball bowled. The weather forecast had hinted at heavier rain, and despite our optimism, persistent drizzle has dashed any hopes of play today. Both teams will now regroup and return on Day 3, hopefully to better conditions, with the aim of pushing for a result in the remaining days.
UPDATE - 8.16 am GMT - Not much has changed since the last update, with the drizzle continuing on and off throughout the day. Puddles have formed on the covers, which have been spread across the entire ground, and with the sun not making an appearance at all, the situation remains bleak. As optimistic as we want to be, the prospects of any play today seem slim at best. Let's hope for a positive change, but the weather isn't helping our cause at the moment.
While we await more news from Kanpur, let’s take a look at the next big ICC event, the Women's T20 World Cup, which is set to unfold from October 3, 2024, in the UAE. This exciting spectacle will feature 10 teams competing in two groups of five. Originally scheduled to be held in Bangladesh, it had to be relocated due to the political unrest in the country. As always, Australia will be a favourite, entering the tournament as the defending champions and having lifted the trophy six times in the past. The allure of women's cricket has been steadily rising, and anticipation is building for what promises to be another spectacular tournament.
In case you missed it, during a press conference before this Test, Shakib Al Hasan expressed his desire to retire from the Test format. While he mentioned that he is done with T20Is, with the World Cup being his final appearance, he hopes to play his last Test at home. Bangladesh is set to host South Africa for a two-match Test series in October, though the series is pending security clearance from Cricket South Africa due to political unrest in the country over the past couple of months. If the series gets the green light, one of Bangladesh's greatest players could bid farewell to Test cricket at the national capital, Dhaka.
With the start of this Test being gloomy and rain still in the forecast for Day 3, the outlook for the final two days is much more promising, with brighter skies and significantly improved conditions. This could give both teams just enough time to push for a decisive result. India, in particular, may press harder to force a result, making the contest even more intriguing. Bangladesh, with their capabilities, could certainly look to capitalize on any opportunity that comes their way, setting up an exciting remainder of the match!
UPDATE - 6.42 am GMT - Live visuals show the fourth umpire, Virender Sharma, having a discussion with who appears to be the chief of the ground staff. They are likely assessing the time needed to prepare the field for some play today, if and when the rain subsides. While the light has improved somewhat, the rain needs to stop completely before the ground staff can begin their work. The waiting game continues!
The day has changed, but New Zealand's fortunes do not seem to have improved. Having lost both openers before the close of play on Day 2, Day 3 has started in the worst possible fashion for the visitors, as they continue to struggle against a dominant Sri Lankan side. Starting the day at 22/2 in response to Sri Lanka's mammoth total of 602, the Kiwis have been bundled out for just 88. Prabath Jayasuriya and debutant Nishan Peiris joined forces to run through the Kiwis, with Jayasuriya claiming his 8th five-wicket haul in Galle. Trailing by 514 runs, the visitors have been asked to bat again, facing an uphill battle as they look to recover in their second innings.
UPDATE - 6.05 am GMT - Live visuals show the Super Soppers rolling over the covers with the covers well intact, but with dark clouds still looming overhead, the umpires are checking the light meters, signalling that light may also be a concern. We've lost an entire session on Day 2 as Lunch is officially called. To make matters worse, it has started drizzling again. Abhinav Mukund informs us that the next official update will be at 6.40 am GMT. Although the situation doesn't look very promising at the moment, we remain optimistic that the weather will clear and allow some play to resume.
UPDATE - 5.45 am GMT - We are as happy to inform you as you are to read this - It has stopped raining! However, given the amount of rain we've had, there’s still a long way to go, and the ground staff will first need to deal with the waterlogged covers. Finally, a ray of hope and now let's hope that the weather holds up for the rest of the day.
UPDATE - 5.27 am GMT - Oh, no! The rain has returned, confirming the ground staff's cautious decision to keep the covers on in anticipation of another shower. Unfortunately, this means that any hopes of play today are dwindling. Let’s stay hopeful for a break in the weather!
While we wait for better news from Kanpur, let's take a look at why this match carries extra significance, especially considering the current standings in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table and the race to secure a spot in the top two. India, sitting at the top of the table, will be eager to get back on the field and maximize this home advantage, with a particular focus on winning this match. A draw would mean sharing points, something India will want to avoid. With their formidable home record and dominance, they will fancy their chances of making the most of this opportunity, especially with the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand on home soil.
UPDATE - 5.06 am GMT - We are hearing that both teams, who had arrived at the venue, have now returned to their hotel. Things are looking quite bleak for any sort of action today. For now, all we can do is hope for the situation to improve. Stay tuned for more news.
UPDATE - 4.42 am GMT - There's a bit of positive news as the rain has stopped in Kanpur. However, there hasn't been any movement on the ground yet, with the covers still firmly in place. It seems the ground staff believe this could be just a brief break in the rain, and another spell may be on the horizon. Let's remain hopeful for some quick progress as we await further updates!
Back to Sri Lanka, where Kamindu Mendis’s impressive 182, along with centuries from Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis, have propelled the hosts to a commanding total of 602. Batting late on Day 2, New Zealand found themselves in early trouble, losing both openers and now face a challenging situation as they look to steady the ship. With Sri Lanka in the driver’s seat, it’ll be intriguing to see how the visitors respond on Day 3. It’s nice and sunny in Galle, where the day has just begun. You can switch tabs and follow all the action as it unfolds!
Moving to England now, where the hosts, trailing 0-2 in the ODI series against their old rivals Australia, have staged a remarkable comeback to bring the series level. In a rain-affected fourth ODI at Lord's, England set a formidable total of 312 in a 39-overs-per-side contest after being put into bat. Key contributions from Ben Duckett and Harry Brook anchored the innings, but it was Liam Livingstone who stole the show with a blistering 27-ball 62, including an explosive final over where he clattered Mitchell Starc for 28 runs. In reply, Australia started brightly with a solid opening partnership, but once that 68-run stand was broken, the wheels fell off and they were eventually bowled out for 126 inside 25 overs. As neutrals, we all wanted the series to go the distance, and our prayers have been answered. The series decider is set to take place in Bristol on Sunday, September 29, where rain is likely to follow the two teams, but let’s hope for the best!
Over in the UAE, after a disappointing ODI series against Afghanistan in Sharjah, South Africa have drawn first blood in their T20I series against Ireland in Abu Dhabi. The Proteas secured a fairly dominant victory, showcasing their prowess both with bat and ball, taking an unassailable lead in the two-match series. Patrick Kruger’s impressive four-wicket haul was instrumental in restricting the Irish to 171, while the opening duo of Ryan Rickelton and Reeza Hendricks played pivotal roles in powering South Africa to a comfortable win. The second and final T20I of the series is scheduled for September 29th, Sunday, as the Proteas look to complete a clean sweep. Meanwhile, Ireland will aim to end the series on level terms and gain momentum heading into the ODI series that follows.
While we await improvements in the weather in Kanpur, let’s take a moment to recap an action-packed Friday in the cricketing world! One of the standout performances came from Sri Lanka's latest batting sensation, Kamindu Mendis, who made headlines by etching his name in the history books. He equalled the legendary Sir Don Bradman by reaching 1,000 Test runs in just 13 innings, marking the second-fewest innings taken to achieve this milestone in Test history. Only Herbert Sutcliffe and Everton Weekes have accomplished this feat in fewer innings, both achieving it in just 12 innings.
UPDATE - 3.36 am GMT - Live visuals show that it’s still drizzling, and the entire ground is under covers. The match officials, armed with umbrellas, are inspecting the outfield, which has taken a hit due to the incessant rains over the past day and a half. Abhinav Mukund informs us that the rain had stopped briefly earlier, and just as the ground staff began removing the covers, the rain made an unwelcome return. The match officials are now heading towards the Bangladesh camp, where the two on-field umpires are sharing their observations with head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe. Stay tuned for more updates.
UPDATE - 3.21 am GMT - We have official confirmation that the start of play on Day 2 has been delayed due to rain. It's a similar start to the day as yesterday, but remember, we did manage to get the game underway after an hour's delay. Let's hope for a repeat today, if not an earlier start. Stick around for more news.
UPDATE - 3.10 am GMT - Well, not the start any of us would have hoped for as a drizzle has settled in at Kanpur. That puts the possibility of an early start out of the picture, but let's remain optimistic that the rain will ease off soon and conditions will improve in time for play to begin at the usual time of 4 am GMT. Stay tuned for further updates!
As we gear up for Day 2, the forecast doesn’t look promising, with more rain looming on the horizon. But if we’re fortunate enough to avoid the showers, we could be in for another gripping day of Test cricket. In rain-affected Tests like this one, lost time is often made up by starting the day early, and that could be the case today, weather permitting. So, stay tuned as we bring you all the action from Kanpur!
The second session was delayed by a brief shower, but once play resumed, Ravichandran Ashwin quickly sent the Bangladesh skipper packing. Despite looking scratchy at times, Mominul hung in there alongside Mushfiqur Rahim as the light began to fade. However, just 9 overs into the session, bad light forced the players off the field, and soon after, rain dashed any hopes of further play for the day.
The action on Day 1 began after an hour's delay due to overnight rain, with Rohit Sharma electing to bowl first. Bangladesh’s openers showed some fight early on, but it wasn’t long before India’s Akash Deep made his mark, dismissing both openers with disciplined bowling. Najmul Hossain Shanto looked assured at the crease, while Mominul Haque, despite a nervy start, found a way to settle in, guiding Bangladesh to Lunch with minimal damage.
Hello and a warm welcome, folks, to Day 2 of the second Test between India and Bangladesh at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur! Day 1 was marred by rain, allowing only 35 overs of play, but both teams managed to land a few blows, setting up what promises to be a fascinating second day, provided the weather cooperates.
... DAY 2, SESSION 1 ...
Right then, India have made the most of the time they've had with the ball and will likely be the slightly happier side at the end of Day 1. However, Bangladesh have shown resilience and will be eager to continue their fight heading into Day 2. Given the time lost today, we might be in for an early start on Day 2, that is the 28th of September, although there's no official confirmation yet. Be sure to join us early as we build up to what promises to be another interesting day of Test cricket. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
The second session saw India make a breakthrough with Ravichandran Ashwin trapping Najmul Hossain Shanto in front of the stumps. Mominul Haque, however, continued to show his mettle, riding his luck while ensuring that the bad balls were punished. Alongside him, Mushfiqur Rahim adopted a cautious approach, settling in well. Just as Bangladesh looked to build momentum, bad light descended, followed closely by rain, bringing a premature end to a gripping day's play.
Earlier in the day, the game began after an hour's delay due to overnight rain, which left the outfield wet. With overcast skies overhead, Rohit Sharma had no hesitation in opting to bowl first, marking the first time in nine years that India, in a home Test, inserted the opposition into bat. However, the first session didn't quite go as planned for the hosts, as Bangladesh put up a solid resistance. Akash Deep, rewarded for his consistency with line and length, managed to dismiss both openers. Despite these early breakthroughs, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque steadied the ship, ensuring the visitors went into lunch in a better position.
Unfortunately, we don't have good news. The rain has taken full control, and STUMPS have been called for Day 1. With the weather casting uncertainty over the start of this Test match, today's outcome felt inevitable. However, despite the interruptions and delays, we've been treated to some truly competitive red-ball cricket on Day 1.
UPDATE - 9.19 am GMT - The rain shows no signs of letting up, and with conditions looking grim, you can switch tabs to catch all the action from the ongoing match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The hosts have delivered an impressive batting display, led by Dinesh Chandimal and now Kamindu Mendis.
UPDATE - 8.56 am GMT - With heavy clouds looming overhead, the drizzle has intensified into a steady downpour and the ground is now fully sealed as the covers have been firmly put in place.
UPDATE - 8.38 am GMT - Uh oh! The light has faded significantly, prompting the two umpires to converge and discuss the situation. After a brief conversation, they've decided that the conditions are no longer suitable for play, and the players are walking off the field. To be honest, this was coming as it had gradually darkened over the last few overs, with overcast skies dominating the scene. While it isn't raining at the moment, the ground staff anticipate a bout of rain is just around the corner and, as a precaution, are bringing the covers on. We managed to get 9 overs of play in since Lunch, during which Bangladesh lost their skipper, but Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim fought it out under the fading light.

Right then, after a 15-minute delay, we are all set for the second session to get underway. The sun is out as the two umpires and the Indian players head to the centre. India are starting with spin in the form of Ravichandran Ashwin. It will be Ashwin to Mominul Haque first up. Two slips and a short leg in place. Away we go...
UPDATE - 7.37 am GMT - While it has stopped raining, we are going to have a bit of a delay in the proceedings. The majority of the covers have been removed but the ground staff need a bit more time to mop up the outfield. The second session will commence at 7.55 am GMT. The skies have cleared up a bit and we can see some blue skies. Hopefully, the good weather will hold for the rest of the day.
... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...
Throughout the first session, there was ample assistance for the pacers to keep them interested, but the conditions are likely to ease over the course of the next two sessions. For Shanto and Mominul, the challenge now is to start afresh after Lunch. Once they settle in, they must ensure they convert their starts into substantial scores. While the players enjoy their lunch, you can switch tabs and follow the action from Day 2 of the second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Galle where the hosts are piling on the runs. Be sure to join us back here at 7.40 am GMT for the start of the second session, and let's hope the rain subsides so we can have a prompt start.
Promoted to number three, Mominul Haque looked shaky at the start but managed to put the balls that beat the bat behind him. Alongside Najmul Hossain Shanto, he ensured they capitalized on run-scoring opportunities whenever they presented themselves. Both batters successfully survived LBW reviews against them, allowing Bangladesh to head into Lunch with just two wickets down.
After being inserted into bat, Bangladesh knew they were in for a challenging phase early on. The two openers managed to navigate the first half hour unscathed, showing some resilience against the Indian bowling attack. However, their troubles began as soon as Akash Deep was introduced into the attack. First, Zakir Hasan edged a low sharp catch to gully, and then India successfully managed to overturn an LBW call against Shadman Islam.
End of an eventful session of Test cricket! Bangladesh will feel they have done the hard yards and will be the happier of the two sides. On the other hand, India, despite having helpful conditions, may feel a bit disappointed to have taken only two wickets. They would have hoped for more breakthroughs given the assistance offered by the pitch for the pacers. As the drizzle intensifies, the ground staff swiftly bring the covers on in an effort to protect the entire ground.

DRINKS! What an eventful first hour of play we’ve witnessed! Following a solid start with the ball, India have made two key breakthroughs, making their decision to bowl first shine even brighter. While the pitch hasn't offered much assistance to the pacers, disciplined lines and lengths have provided opportunities to exploit. However, with the ball starting to grip and behaving in line with Kanpur's reputation, spin has been introduced earlier than expected. Bangladesh will now be looking to regroup and navigate the remainder of the session until Lunch without losing any more wickets. Mohammed Siraj comes back for a burst.

Akash Deep to Zakir Hasan, OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Sharp catch by Yashasvi Jaiswal! Immediate impact for Akash Deep. Akash lands it on a good length, in the channel on off from around the wicket. Zakir Hasan plays the line of the ball as he looks to defend it with a straight bat. The ball straightens off the deck and catches the outside edge. Jaiswal at gully is in really tight and he reacts quickly. Goes low to his right and grabs it. Jaiswal claims it but the umpires ask Zakir to wait as they refer it upstairs. The third umpire looks at multiple angles but the replays appear a bit blurry. He does not have conclusive evidence to suggest that the ball has been grassed. He concludes that Jaiswal has his fingers underneath the ball and OUT flashes on the big screen. Zakir goes for a 24-ball duck.
A brilliant take from Yashasvi Jaiswal low to his right. The umpires send it upstairs to just have a look if it was taken cleanly! The third umpire goes through multiple angles of footage to see if the fingers were under the ball as the catch was taken. The third umpire confirms the catch to be clean and gives it OUT!

STAT ATTACK - This marks the first time since 1964 in a Kanpur Test that a team winning the toss has chosen to bowl first. Additionally, it's the first instance in nine years during a home Test where India have won the toss and opted to bowl first. Notably, the last time India inserted the opposition into bat was in 2015 during the Bengaluru Test against South Africa.
The captain of Bangladesh, Najmul Hossain Shanto says that they were looking to bat first so they are happy to have got what they wanted. Mentions that they bowled well in the first Test and it will be important for the bowlers to continue the good work. Feels that once they get in, batters need to convert starts into big scores. Reckons that it will be important how they handle the new ball. Informs that they have made two changes to the team with Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed missing out and Khaled Ahmed and Taijul Islam coming in for them.
Rohit Sharma, the skipper of India says there is little softness in the pitch and they want to make the most of it with their 3 seamers. Adds that there is a bit more grass than the regular Kanpur pitch and they want to give their bowlers a good chance to make early inroads. Talks about the positives from the last match and says the team came up on top and put in strong performances. States the importance of finding ways to win games which is what he looks for from the side. Concludes that they are going in with the same team.
Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Shadman Islam, Zakir Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto (C), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das (WK), Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam (In for Nahid Rana), Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed (In for Taskin Ahmed).
India (Unchanged Playing XI) - Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (WK), KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.
TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in the favour of Rohit Sharma. India have won the toss and have opted to BOWL first.
Morne Morkel, the Indian bowling coach is in for a flash interview. He says the first week has been incredible and he has had a great welcome into the side. Adds that there are a lot of Test matches on the calendar and it's very important for him to connect with the guys and look for the ones who are tapping at the door for an opportunity and just build a good team environment. Concludes that with different sets of bowlers and different bandwidths of their experiences, he wants to try to make everybody feel at home and just learn from one another.
UPDATE - 4.06 am GMT - The match officials have relayed their observations to both camps, and we should expect an official update soon. With both sets of players having begun their warm-ups, we should not be far from some action. Here it is - the TOSS will take place at 4.30 am GMT with the first ball to be bowled at 5 am GMT. A big cheer erupts from the crowd as local hero Kuldeep Yadav makes his way to the centre. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is also out now and heads straight to inspect the pitch. Stick around as the flip of the coin and the team news is coming up shortly.
UPDATE - 3.59 am GMT - There's certainly more activity on the ground now, with nearly all the covers removed as we near the scheduled inspection. The Super Sopper is diligently working to ensure the outfield is dry, and the ground staff are making every effort to prepare the pitch and surrounding areas for play. The two on-field umpires, along with the fourth umpire, are already out there inspecting the outfield. Abhinav Mukund, on air, informs that the ground staff from both teams have made their way out to the middle and have started to put down the markers for the warm-up drills. Fingers crossed for a positive update soon!
PITCH REPORT - While we await the inspection, Murali Kartik is pitchside, providing insights about the deck. He starts by informing that it is a black soil surface, evident from its darkish appearance. Mentions that surfaces in Kanpur are traditionally low and slow with the first innings total generally on the higher side but scores tend to decrease as the game progresses. Observing the straw-coloured grass, Kartik notes that there might be some assistance for the pacers early on. Further says that historically, teams have preferred to bat first here but feels that the overcast conditions could influence the decision at the toss.
UPDATE - 3.27 am GMT - Uh oh, the match officials have assessed the conditions and believe it will take more time for the ground staff to get the field ready for play. As a result, the toss has been delayed, and an inspection is scheduled for 4 am GMT. Just a reminder, it isn't raining at the moment, and the Indian players are already out on the park, getting a feel of the conditions. Stay tuned for further updates!
UPDATE - 3.19 am GMT - A bit of a dampener to start the day. Although there's no rain currently, overcast conditions prevail, and last night's downpour has caused water to accumulate on the covers. The ground staff are hard at work, focusing on removing the excess water from the covers before they can be taken off completely. Super Soppers are in action, working to mop up the wet patches and speed up the drying process. As per Abhinav Mukund on air, the toss could be delayed, though there’s no official word just yet. Fingers crossed for a timely start!
India, meanwhile, have continued their dominance in red-ball cricket on home soil, once again demonstrating their depth and resilience in the previous match. Despite Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli not being among the runs, India's batting lineup showed its immense strength, while their bowling attack, featuring both pace and spin, was equally impressive. The balance of this side looks formidable, and it's unlikely we’ll see many changes, except perhaps the inclusion of local favourite Kuldeep Yadav, depending on the nature of the pitch. With uncertain weather looming over the first three days, it will be interesting to see if India opt for that additional spinner. As both teams vie for crucial WTC points, they'll be eager to put their best foot forward, promising yet another thrilling encounter. The anticipation builds as we await the toss and team updates, which are just around the corner!
Bangladesh entered this series with confidence, riding the wave of a 2-0 Test series triumph over Pakistan, and were expected to provide a stern challenge to India. They certainly delivered on that promise early in the first Test, rattling India by reducing them to six quick wickets. However, they couldn’t sustain the pressure, letting the game slip away and struggling to regain control. Despite the setbacks, Bangladesh, brimming with both talent and experience, will be eager to deliver a complete performance, turning promising starts into lasting impacts, something they fell short of in the previous game. All eyes will also be on Shakib Al Hasan, who will be eager to make the most of this match following his recent announcement of retirement from T20Is, as well as his decision to retire from Test cricket after the upcoming home Test series against South Africa, that remains uncertain given the pending security clearances.
Hello and welcome to Day 1 of the second and final Test match of this exciting 2-match series, where India square up against Bangladesh at the iconic Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. Fresh off a commanding victory in the first Test, India will aim to replicate their all-round brilliance and secure a clean sweep with a 2-0 series win. However, Bangladesh will be eager to bounce back and deliver a much-improved performance, fighting to end the series on level terms.
