As they say, true assessment of conditions comes only after both sides have batted but the pitch has certainly quickened up on Day 2. Jofra Archer, in particular, will relish the prospect of bowling in these conditions. We did see Rishabh Pant heading out for a net session, but how comfortable he is while holding the bat remains to be seen. Since it was an external blow, he is permitted to bat at any position the team requires. For now, the tourists' first task will be to navigate the challenge of the new ball. Back in a bit for India's batting effort.

Jamie Smith continued his rich vein of form in the series, while Brydon Carse was equally impressive, bringing up his maiden Test fifty. Their 84-run stand proved invaluable, helping England forge a solid recovery after blows early in the morning. Returning to the side after a break at Edgbaston, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers with a sensational five-wicket haul, a performance that earns him a place on the Lord’s honours board for the first time in his career. Mohammed Siraj bowled his heart out without much luck. Smith was dropped on 5 off his bowling by KL Rahul, and Siraj eventually finished with two wickets to his name.

England have been bowled out for 387! They will gladly take that, having been in trouble at 271 for 7 earlier in the morning. The last three wickets added 116 runs and that could make all the difference when we look back at the game. Joe Root, with his 37th Test hundred, was the standout performer for the hosts. The two Bens, Duckett and Stokes, along with Ollie Pope, all got starts but couldn’t convert them into big scores.

And spotting that, Siraj fires in a pinpoint yorker, right at the base of the middle stump. Carse tries to whip that away to the leg side, but does not lay any bat on it and hears the stumps shattering behind him. Siraj finishes with a couple of wickets as England are bundled up on 387.

Brydon Carse clears the front leg and swings across, but mistimes it aerially off the toe end of the bat. The ball sails and descends to the right of Akash Deep who is standing a few yards ahead from the ropes at widish deep mid-wicket. Akash misjudges it and tries to grab it with a dive to his right, with both his hands stretched in front, but does not even manage to get a hand on it as the ball bursts through. Akash falls over on the ground and the ball bounces near him and gets parried behind off his right boot before rolling towards the fence behind. But Akash recovers as he gets up and stops the ball, keeping the batters down to a couple.

Shoaib Bashir is the last man in. A brief hold-up in play as Shubman Gill is down, receiving treatment from the physio with stretching exercises on his right leg. This is his 13th five-fer and the most by any Indian bowler in away Tests, overtaking former Indian skipper Kapil Dev. Bumrah bowls his stock delivery as he aims the stumps, on a good length. It lands and jags in a touch and also stays down a fraction. Jofra Archer attempts to block off the back foot. ... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...

The lower order frustrated India at Headingley, and that story seems to be repeating here as well. They will need to regroup and reset when they return after the break. It could have all gone downhill for England after those three early wickets. They were in danger of being bowled out in the first session itself. The pitch looked to have quickened up in the morning, but as the ball softened, batting became noticeably easier. England will look to push towards 400, while India will look to limit the damage. The English pair made merry with those tactics and ticked along quite comfortably. Although there was another change of ball later, one that seemed to please Shubman Gill this time, it did little to disrupt the rhythm of the partnership as the bowlers, apart from Bumrah, didn’t look particularly threatening. Jamie Smith, who was dropped on 5 by KL Rahul, went on to reach yet another fifty with the stand currently worth 82 runs.

63 legal deliveries into the second new ball, it went out of shape and had to be replaced. The ball selected did not sit well with the Indians, who felt it was nowhere near as new as it should have been. Mohammed Siraj and Shubman Gill made their displeasure known to the umpires, and from that point on, India appeared rattled. Despite the pressure created, they opened up the field and seemed solely focused on dismissing Brydon Carse and were happy to give easy singles to Jamie Smith.

After enduring what must have felt like one of the longest nights of his career while stranded on 99, Joe Root needed just one ball in the morning to reach his landmark. However, he couldn't stay much longer at the crease. Jasprit Bumrah gave India the perfect start to the day with a fiery three-wicket burst in his opening spell. England were reduced to 271/7 but then came that momentum-shifting moment.

SESSION SUMMARY - 22 overs, 102 runs and 3 wickets. After a serene first day at Lord’s, the morning session on Day 2 was eventful and packed with drama. England will be the happier of the two sides at this stage, having recovered well from early blows. As for India, the start was promising, but the momentum fizzled out as the session progressed.

PITCH REPORT - Raunak Kapoor and Deep Dasgupta are pitchside, inspecting the Day 2 track at Lord's. Deep notes that it's still a solid batting surface. Well then, an absorbing opening day of this third Test has flown by. It was laden with patience, grind, and of course, hard work. The surface offered subtle challenges, turn for Jadeja and the occasional uneven bounce for the seamers, keeping both bat and ball in constant contest. It was a hard-fought day that rewarded discipline and careful application over flair. With the second new ball only 2.5 overs old, the first hour of the second day promises a stern examination for Joe Root and Ben Stokes as they look to push England towards a commanding total. The Indian bowlers will be keen to make early inroads, capitalising on the freshness of the cherry to turn the tide. Day 2 begins on Friday, 11th July, and the first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 3.30 pm IST (10 am GMT). For a while, India held the squeeze, pairing spin and seam to keep the runs on a leash. But Joe Root was in his bubble of zen, unflustered by bounce or movement. He soaked up everything India threw at him, rarely looking hurried. The second session was an absolute slow-burn, and lifeless, with the game progressing at a snail's pace. Not much happened, but the Indians were pretty disciplined with their lines and lengths. Rishabh Pant walked off the field after taking a blow on his left index finger, with Jurel coming in as the substitute keeper. Pope and Root dug in a resilient stand with the former notching up yet another fifty, with Root also crossing 3000 Test runs against India itself. Overall, with not much action, only 70 runs came in the afternoon session in 24 overs, but the Indians were deprived of wickets. Hence, uncharacteristically, the session went England's way.

Ben Stokes yet again won the toss and this time, elected to bat on a sunny, bright day in London. However, India wrested control after a cautious first hour from England, with Nitish Kumar Reddy striking twice post drinks to peg the visitors back at 44/2. Again, the English opening pair failed to bat long enough. The slower pitch and residual moisture aided movement, especially from the Nursery End, where Bumrah and Reddy thrived. False shots, uneven bounce, and fading lacquer on the Dukes ball added to England’s discomfort, before Root and Pope steadied things to close a gripping session which ended as a draw.

Alongside him, a visibly hobbling Ben Stokes limped through the Long Room, where members stood to salute the pair’s grit and resilience, with England bagging the evening session as well.

... DAY 1, THIRD SESSION ...

In this Bazball era, Root and Pope showed they can still adapt to the old-school style of Test batting when the situation calls for it. With the ball getting softer, England will know this is a phase they can capitalise on. It is now about putting their heads down after the break and cashing in on this start. In the only over bowled by Ravindra Jadeja so far, he managed to get one to rip past the outside edge and we might see spin come into play more consistently from one end after Tea. Back in a bit for the third and final session of the day.

After Bumrah and Siraj were taken out of the attack, Root and Pope looked a lot more comfortable at the crease, with Akash Deep and Nitish Kumar Reddy not posing the same level of threat. Root brought up 3000 Test runs against India on his way to a composed fifty, while Pope is closing in on a half-century of his own. In a bit of a setback for India, Rishabh Pant took a blow to his left hand while diving to stop a delivery and walked off the field with Dhruv Jurel taking over the wicket-keeping duties.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj resumed the attack for the tourists after Lunch and were disciplined with their lines and lengths. The duo combined well to build pressure, even stringing together a sequence of 28 consecutive dot balls at one stage. Just 26 runs came in 12 overs in the first hour, and the pressure seemed to get to Root and Pope. A few false shots crept in, but they were fortunate not to nick it behind. Despite the mounting pressure, the pair managed to hang in there.

70 runs in 24 overs. A sedate session in terms of scoring for England, but they won’t mind one bit. The wickets column remained untouched through the afternoon, and that will please the hosts. India, on the other hand, might feel a touch unlucky, having nothing to show for their disciplined effort. However, they will take heart from the fact that they made run-scoring difficult and didn’t allow England any easy runs.

The Indians have managed to keep the batters in check as the run rate has been uncharacteristically low, with the batters just trying to feel the ball on the bat. Nothing too extravagant from the bowlers as they have just been very disciplined and have played with the patience level of both Root and Pope, who have held through nicely so far. Here we go...

... DAY 1, SECOND SESSION ...

Well then, an absorbing morning session has ticked by in this third Test. Come the second session, India's main aim will be to break this blossoming partnership between Root and Pope. Root, in particular, who holds a healthy average in the north of over 54, at Lord's, only second to Kevin Pietersen. And coming back after Lunch, England's primary goal will be to extend this stand and bat out through the second session, which is considered as the best one for batting. An interesting afternoon session is on the cards. Play resumes at 6.10 pm IST (12.40 pm GMT). Stay tuned.

Interestingly, the conditions seemed to favour the bowlers operating from the Nursery End, where Bumrah switched his ends and from where Reddy made that impactful double strike. That particular end has consistently offered a bit more bite off the surface and through the air, with noticeable swing and seam movement. The contrast with the Pavilion End has been quite stark, suggesting subtle variations in the turf or wind direction may be playing a role in accentuating the movement.

Suddenly, the batters looked like cats on a hot tin roof, unsettled by the lateral movement and uneven bounce. A lot of edges didn’t carry, and a couple of chances went begging, including one tough grab spilled by skipper Gill at gully. With the lacquer wearing off the Dukes ball after the 13th or the 14th over, it started to talk a bit more, aided by some tackiness beneath the surface. Pope had his share of jitters but found stability through Root’s calming influence. Root’s method stood out. He simply let the ball come to him, trusting the fundamentals with a classic ‘playing the ball on its merit' approach. Unflashy, but immensely effective on a pitch that demanded patience and tight technique.

Although far from convincing, England managed to win the first mini-battle by surviving the initial hour. There were half-chances, persistent appeals, and several false shots induced, but no breakthroughs for the tourists. But, just after the drinks break, Gill's decision to introduce Nitish Kumar Reddy into the attack turned out to be a true masterstroke. Reddy landed a double blow in the same over, dismissing both openers and leaving England wobbling at 44/2.

It was indeed a testing initiation for the English batters on a slower pitch laced with early moisture, which helped the ball shape back and forth nicely. Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep worked hard to make the full use of the new ball, probing in the right channels and subtly adapting to the famous Lord's slope. Zak Crawley looked tentative to start with, using his feet to break the bowler's rhythm, more or less lacking some confidence while Duckett appeared a bit more composed at the crease.

SESSION SUMMARY - 25 Overs, 83 Runs, 2 Wickets. A highly entertaining opening session of this third Test. And this is just the beginning of what promises to be an enthralling match ahead. It's a shared session as the first hour belonged to the hosts, while the next one was bossed up by the Indians with the ball, constantly asking the right questions.

The replay confirms it did. Now the focus shifts to whether Root had his bat grounded inside the crease when the ball crashed into the stumps at the bowler’s end. And yes, just in time, Root managed to plonk his bat in, safely past the line.

PITCH REPORT - Down at the pitchside, Deep Dasgupta observes a surface that looks promising, sporting some lively grass and early moisture. He expects bowlers to get assistance regardless of the slope, suggesting a fair bit for both pacers and spinners. While it appears to be a decent batting strip too, due to sunny conditions, he reckons this pitch offers more help to the bowlers compared to the previous two games. As for spinners, he believes that they might extract some turn thanks to the slope but will likely lean on footmarks as the match progresses.

At the WTC final last month here at Lord's, pacers dominated proceedings, with 14 wickets falling on both Day 1 and Day 2. England, no doubt, had to toil very hard in the boiling London heat, bowling around 120 overs. But with the second new ball taken, they managed to get just enough seam movement to trouble the batters and after Ravindra Jadeja's wicket, it just took England exactly 6 overs to wrap up the Indian lower order. The highlight of this English bowling attack was Jofra Archer who delivered literal thunderbolts at the batters and produced a gem of a delivery to dismiss Jaiswal in the very third ball of his return in the whites. Ben Stokes too, delivered a highly testing spell, but it was Chris Woakes who chipped in with three wickets to his name.

Looking at the Indian scorecard, contributions have come from almost all. Barring Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, everyone in the top 8 managed to cross 20 runs. The Indian batting more or less revolved around KL Rahul's innings, laden with class and flair as he became the second Indian batter to register at least two centuries at Lord's. The lower order thrust was provided by Ravindra Jadeja's 72 and Washington Sundar's crucial 23 as well.

In a bit of a setback for England, Shoaib Bashir walked off the field after taking a blow to his left hand. It appeared to be a dislocation at the time and the hosts will be hoping he can return for the final session. The Dukes ball typically starts to move around the 12-over mark once the lacquer wears off, and England will be eager to exploit that window, which is around the corner. India, with the deficit down to 71, will look to Jadeja and Reddy to carry on the recovery and push towards parity and beyond. Back in a bit for the final session of the day.

Nitish Kumar Reddy was tested by a fiery spell from Jofra Archer operating at full tilt and survived a couple of run out chances, with Ollie Pope missing direct-hit opportunities on both occasions. With the second new ball looming, a pivotal phase awaited both sides. Archer steamed in from one end and continued to send down thunderbolts, but as a unit, England lacked a bit of discipline with the new ball and did not quite test the two batters enough. The running between the wickets continued to be iffy between Jadeja and Reddy, but the pair managed to hold fort and saw the session through.

A moment of brilliance from Ben Stokes, right on the stroke of Lunch, had given England the breakthrough they were desperate for. Their spirits lifted even further with the dismissal of KL Rahul, who fell immediately after reaching his hundred. Wickets on either side of the Lunch break triggered panic in the Indian camp, and it showed in their running between the wickets.
