Welcome back for England's innings with the bat. The Indians form a huddle near the ropes. It seems like Shubman Gill hasn't taken the field, and KL Rahul is providing a detailed pep talk to his mates before scattering out to the field. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett are the two openers for England. Akash Deep has the new ball and is raring to go. Three slips and a gully for in place. Here we go...

With memories of the Headingley collapse still fresh, Gill came in with a clear sense of purpose. He understood the task and batted with unshakable patience, refusing to chase anything outside his zone. The most defining feature of his innings was its purity. There were barely any false strokes, and he rarely looked beaten. His presence at the crease gave the innings a spine, a calm rhythm that kept India grounded. He was nicely supported by Ravindra Jadeja for a 203-run stand as Jadeja himself scored 89 and steadied India's ship after a minor wobble. After the dismissal of Jadeja, England sensed another collapse, but Washington Sundar dashed any chances of that. He supported Gill extremely well and formed a 144-run stand as the Indian skipper walked past many records to score 269 before getting out. Once Gill fell, India slipped from 574/7 to 587 all out. Shoaib Bashir was the pick of the bowlers for England with 3 wickets, whereas Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue claimed two apiece. Well then, after bowling for one and a half day, England will be out to bat now. But make no mistake, they wil be out with the same intensity as the pitch is still flat and good for batting. Back in a bit for the second innings.

A sensational batting effort from the Indians. They brushed off the collapse of Headingley and batted with much more determination on a placid wicket. The tourists lost KL Rahul very early in the innings, but Yashasvi Jaiswal responded magnificently, first partnering with Karun Nair, and then with skipper Shubman Gill. Jaiswal eventually got out on 87, but the Indian skipper took the duty on his shoulders and batted with ease.

After almost 5 and a half sessions, England have bowled India out on 587. Zak Crawley sprints towards the dressing room to get geared up for batting in this quick turnaround. Meanwhile, Ben Stokes appreciates the efforts of his men as the hosts were made to toil for 151 overs. Despite the conditions against them, they kept pushing, tried every possible angle and tactic. Eventually, their persistence pays off as they manage to claim all ten wickets, but surely, there will be some very tired legs in that English camp.

Mohammed Siraj is early to step out of his crease and Bashir sees him coming. Bashir brings out the carrom ball and bowls it into the pitch, darting it down leg. Siraj ends up walking past the ball and Jamie Smith has all the time in the world to dislodge the bails. Siraj falls for 8 (23) as Bashir gets 3 wickets and India end with 587 runs on the board.

Josh Tongue sticks to bowl short and on middle, climbing above the shoulder height of the batter. Shubman Gill stands deep in the crease and shapes up to pull, but fails to keep it along the ground and the ball goes flat and straight to Ollie Pope who is stationed just in front of square leg. A simple regulation catch and Pope does not make any mistake. But a knock worth remembering from the Indian skipper and gets a warm reception from the Edgbaston crowd as he makes his way to the dressing room. Also, a few English players come to him, shake hands and tap on his shoulders as well. Shubman Gill departs on 269 (387).

All in readiness for the final session on Day 2! A session that could test the endurance of both teams, especially England and could really shape how this Test will be played out. The umpires are in the middle as the players of England make their way out to the field of play as well. Shubman Gill takes his time and seems to be the last one out, wears his helmet and is all set to resume his stay at the crease alongside Akash Deep. A small fist bump from Gill to Akash Deep and it will be Josh Tongue to start proceedings with the ball post Tea. Let's play...

... DAY 2, SESSION 3 ...

Right then, 564 big runs on the board and Shubman Gill unbeaten on 265. Will India be thinking about the declaration? Or will Gill have one eye on scoring 300? Whatever it is, we might see some action straight after Tea. Can Ben Stokes and co muster up some inspiration and make sure that they bowl India out at the earliest? We shall find out soon. Stick around as the final session on Day 2 will begin at 8.30 pm IST (3 pm GMT).

Ben Stokes tried everything in this session but we didn't see him or Woakes bowl. He eventually resorted to the part-timers in order to save some energy for the pacers. Harry Brook and Joe Root bowled as Shoaib Bashir continued to toil. It was Root who got the wicket late in the session and has yet again given a glimmer of hope to England with regards to bowling India out.

India were already in a solid position coming into the afternoon session but had a fairly new batter at the crease. This was England's cue to just hold their lengths and make Washington Sundar play at as many deliveries as possible but they continued with the short stuff for a prolonged period of time and it simply didn't work. Sundar grew in confidence as Gill managed to muster most of the strike and went past not just 200 but also 250, cementing his status as India's prime batter for the next half a decade or so at the very least.

That is yet another massive session for the Indian batters and for the whole team as well, and skipper Shubman Gill has simply made England toil long and hard in the field. As many as 145 runs came in 31 overs, bringing just one wicket for the hosts, that too very late in the session and via Joe Root. The only positive for England was the over rate which was helped by the use of part-timers in the second part of the session.

The ball seems to drift in and Washington Sundar just looks to defend down the line but the ball lands and turns sharply away from the left-hander, leaving Sundar baffled and goes on to crash into the stumps. Root is absolutely pumped as Sundar departs for a gritty 42 (103), ending a stand of 144 runs for the 7th wicket.

The on-air graphic shows a huge achievement for the current Indian skipper. Shubman Gill has now etched his name atop the record books for India, surpassing Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 254 at Pune in 2019 to claim the highest individual score by an Indian Test captain.

... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...

Well then, another fascinating session ticks off in this Test, and India remains well ahead. But recent history offers a brutal reminder as well. India were cruising at 430 for 3 on a similar pitch in Leeds before collapsing to 471. England won’t back down easily and will likely throw in fresh plans after Lunch to break through quickly. India, meanwhile, will be focused on preventing another Headingley with skipper Gill leading from the front with the bat. A very exciting second session begins at 6.10 pm IST (12.40 pm GMT). Stokes eventually spread the field, pulling the slips out and pushing men out into the deep. It was more a tactical retreat than a genuine build-up of pressure, in order to prevent those boundaries from flowing. Gill, calm and calculated, reached his 150 with minimum fuss and continued to hold the innings together with measured precision. And as India were walking through the session almost untouched, Josh Tongue stepped up with a burst of energy. His introduction added fresh bite to a tired attack, and he struck with a sharp lifter that caught Jadeja off guard, ending that 202-run marathon partnership. In the closing stages of the session, Shoaib Bashir managed to extract a hint of turn, while Josh Tongue found some inconsistent bounce. England will be keen to see if they can build on those signs and turn them into meaningful chances as play continues.

Despite the passive surface, England's bowlers weren’t short of intent. Their lengths were, on average, shorter today, with a marked uptick in bouncers, especially in Woakes and Carse's early spells. The lines, however, were slightly wider and less disciplined than the previous day, though that could well be a factor that evolves as the ball gets older. Still, the batters looked mostly unbothered. Boundaries came at a steady rate, and the scoreboard ticked along with quiet assurance.

The second new ball at the start of play had only five overs behind it, but it offered nothing of note. There was no seam, no movement, and little life. The pitch mirrored that mood, being placid and slow, giving batters more time to settle in. Jadeja cashed in early, reaching his 23rd Test fifty, while the partnership ticked past the hundred-run mark. The first hour gave India 55 runs with no such fuss, as the batters never looked rushed.

SESSION SUMMARY - 25 Overs, 109 Runs, 1 Wicket. It's been India's morning without a doubt, as they made merry on a flat deck offering nothing much to the bowlers. But coming to the final few minutes of the session, and post the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja, there was indeed some intent and energy shown by the English bowlers. Especially by Josh Tongue, who not only got a wicket, but also probed the new incoming batter with lethal short ones. But overall, the session goes blue as India scored at a healthy rate, and losing just a single wicket.

DRINKS BREAK! More or less a perfect first hour on Day 2 for India and they have managed to pile on 55 runs in just 13 overs without losing a single wicket. Both Gill and Jadeja have looked proactive and the English bowlers haven't looked like taking a wicket thus far. There were some words exchanged as Jadeja strolled onto the danger area a couple of times and Stokes didn't like it as England in all likeliness will bat last and the roughs might really come into play. However, for now, England need something to give as neither of the two batters seems to be slowing down.

In all readiness for Day 2 to begin, here in Birmingham. A bit overcast, but not at all threatening as the clouds are fairly scattered in the sky. Already, a fair bit of crowd has turned up as the two umpires walk out to the middle. The English players spread out to the park and take their respective positions. And with a fist-pump, out walk Shubman Gill along with Ravindra Jadeja to resume their overnight batting. England skipper Ben Stokes has the newish ball and is raring to go. Let's play...

PITCH REPORT - Deep Dasgupta and Jonathan Trott are inspecting the deck for Day 2. Trott says that the way Gill played was amazing to watch and the partnership with Jadeja will be key. Further talks about the cracks and reckons that the seamers would want to bowl from the end opposite to the cracks. Adds that when the cracks start opening across rather than going up and down, it can cause trouble. Deep reckons that the sun is out and it will be a good day for batting and mentions that there are a few footmarks at one end for the spinners to exploit.

The morning session will be key. If Gill and Jadeja can withstand England's renewed charge and add substantial runs, India will be firmly in charge of the match. However, if England's bowlers can break this partnership quickly, they will expose India's lower order, which includes Washington Sundar, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna, potentially giving them a chance to limit India's first-innings total and get their formidable batting lineup into action. However, the very first examination for the Indian batters is to pass this first hour without any damage, against the second new ball which is just five overs old. Stick around as we continue to build up to the start of Day 2.

England, having won the toss and elected to bowl, will be desperate for early breakthroughs on Day 2. Chris Woakes (2-59) was the pick of their bowlers on Day 1, and the home side will rely on him and others like Brydon Carse to exploit any lingering assistance from the pitch with the second new ball. The short boundaries at Edgbaston, a talking point from Day 1, could continue to play a role, potentially encouraging England's aggressive 'Bazball' approach once they get to bat.

Day 2 of the second Test between England and India at Edgbaston promises to be a crucial one, with India resuming at a strong 310/5 thanks to captain Shubman Gill's magnificent unbeaten century (114). Gill, continuing his stellar form, has anchored the innings brilliantly, and his unbroken 99-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja (41) has brought India back into a commanding position after a brief wobble on Day 1. ... DAY 2, SESSION 1 ...

Right then, at 310/5, India do seem that they have done a solid job till now but we have seen previously that the lower order can be cleaned up in a jiffy and England will push hard to break this stand in the opening hour of play on Day 2 and create an opening. The pitch should remain fairly the same and should be good for batting, which means if Gill and Jadeja get through the first hour or so, a big total could be on the cards. Well, enough with the assumptions, Day 2 will begin on Thursday at 3.30 pm IST (10 am GMT), but you can tune in to the build-up a lot sooner. Cheers!

India needed Shubman Gill to step up under pressure and so he did. Also, an under-fire Ravindra Jadeja also mustered up all of his experience to provide ample support to his skipper. The duo showed controlled aggression and eventually, the English bowlers seemed to have run out of steam. Gill went on to score back-to-back tons in his first two matches as Test captain and made sure that his side didn't lose any more wickets at the end of the day. Jadeja is also unbeaten on 41 and the stand is up to 99, the best one of this innings so far. England will hope that they can make better use of this second new ball but with Carse struggling with a toe issue and Josh Tongue largely ineffective yet again, they will have their work cut out.

After the Lunch break, the scoring started to slow down as Jaiswal and Gill looked to consolidate. However, Ben Stokes got Jaiswal out for 87, which brought Rishabh Pant to the crease. Gill and Pant started to stitch another good partnership and saw the team through to Tea. Post Tea, things started to change and Pant was undone by some greed as he looked to take Shoaib Bashir to the cleaners and got caught in the deep. Nitish Kumar Reddy then came and went and suddenly, England had the chance to pile on the pressure.

It was a bit of a cool day to begin with and there was some cloud cover, but the seamers didn't get much movement in the air or off the seam, well apart from Chris Woakes, who seemed to have put a very ordinary 1st Test behind him and hit his stride right away. KL Rahul looked tentative and got out for a low score, but there was a good fightback from Yashasvi Jaiswal and the new number 3 for Indian, Karun Nair. India did lose Nair minutes before Lunch as Brydon Carse broke the stand and evened things up.

Almost like watching a repeat of the 1st Test but at the end of Day 1 here at Edgbaston, India will feel they have done a reasonable job with the bat. Ben Stokes did opt to bowl first, not because there would be help for his seamers early on but simply because of the fact that it is probably a pretty good track for batting and chasing teams have been successful here in recent times.

Another halt in the play. The Indian skipper seems to be struggling with his fitness and the physio is called out. It seems like Shubman Gill is having a hamstring issue and is getting it stretched by the physio. Gill does a couple of different hamstring stretches but does look good to continue. There seems to be an issue in front the sightscreen and Shubman Gill is just asking the umpire to get it sorted. It looks like one of the LED boards is burning too bright and that is catching the eye of Gill. A bit of a long hold-up but it gets sorted and we are good to continue.

DRINKS BREAK. It has been England's session so far, as they have bowled with disciplined lines and lengths. But if we closely look at the last 20 minutes or so, after those two quick wickets which saw India slip down from 208/3 to 211/5, the scoring rate has picked up a bit. Both Gill and Jadeja have tried to pinch in quick singles and have not spared the looseners in order to counterattack. And the result is, this partnership is 32 runs in 39 balls. However, Stokes will believe that another wicket or a collapse is just around the corner and would be very keen to get into India's vulnerable lower order as we head to the final hour and a half of the day's play. For India, the presence of Shubman Gill in the middle holds a lot of value as he has batted with calmness, without stepping a foot wrong so far. But, he needs good support from the remaining. Karthik responded by acknowledging Kuldeep's quality and success, and also said that he has the best bowling averages among the current lot, but pointed out that India seems to be prioritizing batting depth, especially down the order. ... DAY 1, SESSION 3 ...

Another session ticked by in this second Test, and we’re heading into the final one of the day. England will be keen to break this growing stand quickly and try to expose India's lower order, which looked very vulnerable in the first Test. India, meanwhile, will focus on stretching this partnership and getting through the evening without further setbacks or very minimal damage. An exciting post-Tea session is on the cards. The wicket remained flat and unyielding. It was all calm, almost sluggish, with both sides settling into a rhythm. Then, almost out of nowhere, Ben Stokes returned for another burst and broke the monotony. With the game seemingly going nowhere, he prised out Jaiswal, who played a loose, rash shot to fall on 87. However, post that, bowling seemed to be in control, but Shubman Gill, along with Rishabh Pant, negated the chances of any collapse and batted till the end. Gill, in particular, has looked much more assured and solid in blocking the balls and a lot depends on him to hold one end, from India's perspective.

Flat pitch, not a cloud in sight, and the sun baking down, batting conditions couldn’t be more ideal. The post-Lunch session saw Jaiswal and Gill easing back into rhythm after a pre-interval hiccup. With the surface on the slower side, they had that extra fraction of time to play late and play smart to pinch those singles, doubles, and occasional boundaries. There was no urgency in their approach, just steady rotation of strike, soft hands, and a growing sense of control. England's seamers did keep plugging away, asking the right questions, and even stirred a couple of hopeful appeals. But the Indian duo didn’t budge, sticking to the basics to watch closely and avoid anything extravagant.

SESSION SUMMARY - 28 Overs, 84 Runs, and 1 Wicket. Quite a slow-paced session in terms of action, but there will be a feel-good factor in the Indian camp for sure, as they didn't lose more than one wicket in this phase. The morning session was a shared one, but this afternoon session belonged to the tourists. Bowling looked much organised from England in the last 45 minutes or so, from Stokes especially, since that wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Bashir too, bowled with control, tried a few variations, but was dealt well without much risks.

The ball catches the outside edge and carries into the clutches of the keeper Jamie Smith. ... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...

Heading into the second session, both teams have plenty to play for. India, now at 98/2, and will look to bat deep and give themselves a solid first-innings platform, with Jaiswal already set and looking fluent. His wicket holds the key. England, on the flip side, will feel they’ve clawed their way back with that late wicket and will hope that the bowlers are able to battle through as the Sun is now out and shining brightly. The pitch looks on the slower side, but the ball is still relatively fresh, and they’ll want to make the most of it before it goes soft. A crucial session awaits, which will start at 6.10 pm IST (12.40 pm GMT), so don't go anywhere.

On the bowling front, Chris Woakes was the standout early on, exploiting every bit of movement in the air and off the seam. He bowled with rhythm and beat the bat multiple times, bowling out four Maidens. Though he was denied twice by Umpires' calls on LBWs, he got a big wicket of Rahul. Carse did get rewarded late in the session when Nair edged him. Ben Stokes and ​​​Josh Tongue tried unsettling Jaiswal with a few sharp bouncers before lunch, but the left-hander held his nerve and countered with some authoritative strokes. KL Rahul was overly cautious, and his innings lasted 26 balls for just 2 runs before he was bowled, dragging one back onto his stumps off Chris Woakes. The ball was doing a bit, and it needed grit in the first hour. Jaiswal, however, looked more proactive. He left smartly, waited for width, and played some gorgeous strokes through the off-side whenever the bowlers erred. At 15/1 after nearly nine overs, the innings looked stagnant, but the shift came once Jaiswal started to put the pressure back on the bowlers, forcing them to alter their lengths.

The opening session of Day 1 in this much-anticipated 2nd Test between England and India had a bit of everything from patience to momentum swing. India reached 98/2 in 25 overs, making it a session that both teams can walk away from with mixed feelings. England won the toss and opted to bowl under slightly cloudy skies and used the new ball well early on, but India settled in as the session wore on. Yashasvi Jaiswal played with a blend of caution and confidence, while Karun Nair looked much more assured after a scratchy first Test. An 80-run partnership between them gave India momentum, but a late wicket just before Lunch, with Nair falling for 31, pulled things back slightly for the visitors. A well-contested first session, with India perhaps ahead by a small margin, until that second final over.

Adds that the team put in a strong performance last week and they're carrying plenty of confidence. Mentions that as the Test progresses, you understand the conditions better and can adapt accordingly. Says that they all wanted Jofra Archer in the team, but as he is coming back after a while, they will first look after him. For India, Akash Deep inflicted the early damage on Day 2 and it was he who struck with the second new ball to break the Brook-Smith stand, putting a spring in the team’s step. Deep and Mohammed Siraj combined well to clean up the lower order and the tail, with Siraj finishing with an impressive six-wicket haul. Looking ahead, we have just under an hour left in the day, and it will be interesting to see how India approach the remainder of the day and their second innings, especially with a healthy 180-run lead to play with. It was essentially Harry Brook and Jamie Smith versus India, with the rest of the England lineup offering little resistance. Remarkably, the scorecard features as many as six ducks. Brook and Smith launched a counterattack in the morning session to shift the momentum and then showed maturity in the afternoon by nudging the ball around and rotating the strike when India played with their ego by bowling a defensive line. After Brook fell, it was a procession but Smith remained unbeaten on 184, the highest score by an English wicketkeeper in Test cricket.

Well, the second new ball was always going to be India’s best chance to seize control, and they certainly made it count. From 387 for 5, the hosts collapsed, losing their last 5 wickets for just 20 runs as India wrapped things up quickly to secure a commanding 180-run lead. Looking at it from an English perspective, it could have been far worse. They were 84/5 earlier in the day and still 503 runs adrift but then came that marathon 303-run stand that flipped the momentum.

Mohammed Siraj to Shoaib Bashir, OUT! KNOCKED HIM OVER! Mohammed Siraj wraps up the tail with a 6-for and does the job brilliantly for India! He bowls it on a fuller length, just outside off. It lands and just cuts back into the batter. Shoaib Bashir plants his front foot out but decides to leave it and hears the death rattle as the ball smashes into the off stump. Mohammed Siraj leaps in the air in jubilation as he registers his best bowling figures in England in Tests. Bashir is the sixth English batter to get out on a duck in this innings. Jamie Smith remains unbeaten. But England slip down badly from 387/5 to 407 all out.

Ouch. Shoaib Bashir has taken a nasty blow on the side of the helmet. Mohammed Siraj puts a comforting arm around him, and the rest of the Indian players gather around. Thankfully, Bashir looks okay at first glance. The physio is out in the middle conducting a concussion check. The umpires take this opportunity to call for DRINKS. India have certainly sprung to life with the second new ball, and England still trail by 180 runs. Jamie Smith now has his work cut out as he looks to farm the strike and chip away at the deficit. Bashir puts the helmet back on and we are ready to resume.
