On day 1 of the third phase of India's extended lockdown, long queues were seen outside liquor shops after the Centre allowed sale of alcohol as part of reviving economic activity across the country.
With the exception of containment zones, where there is almost total ban on public movement barring emergencies, liquor shops will be allowed to open everywhere else.
In green and orange zone, liquor shops are set to open everywhere. In red zones only stand-alone liquor shops and shops located inside colonies are allowed to open. In cities such as as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, Indore, and Hyderabad, which are all Red Zones these restrictions will be applied.
Police personnel were seen trying to manage the crowd outside many outlets where more than five people are not allowed at a given time.
Police also had to resort to lathicharge at some places. A shop was reportedly had to be closed in Mayur Vihar in east Delhi as people failed to maintain social distancing.
Strapped for cash, several states including Punjab and Kerala pressed the Centre to ease restrictions on sale of liquor as they could use the much needed revenue from excise duty.

There are strict social distancing guidelines that have to be followed for people visiting the stores. There has to be six feet distance between two buyers. And not more than five people can be allowed around the liquor store. Everyone has to wear a mask and ensure personal hygiene.
