Actor Preity Zinta says she was made to wait five hours at the Khar police station but is still struggling to lodge an FIR. She has been trying for 10 days, she complained on Twitter.
Her posts prompted a denial from the government, with Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe stressing that the police did register the complaint and she was not made to wait unnecessarily.
Zinta says the FIR involves theft and fraud; the police say it involves a land dispute and, therefore, technically a civil dispute.
On Tuesday,Zinta had tweeted: Spent 5 hours at the Khar police station! Phew! Must say the cops were great. Offered me tea, more tea and more tea! The fight for justice has begun! She added another tweet: Trying to lodge an FIR for the past 10 days! I guess I have to follow the system,so be it!
In another tweet, she said: Trying to fight for justice as a normal citizen and not as a star! As a star all I have to do is a press conference and spill d beans. It is time to test the system and see where we stand as normal law abiding citizens! I have a feeling this battle will turn into a war! God help me :-)
On Wednesday,Bagwe said,It is not true that the police made Preity wait for hours and did not register a complaint. He said the police are investigating the matter after taking a written complaint. Preity Zinta went to the police station with her neighbour. The neighbour has given his complaint in writing. It is not her complaint. The police are investigating the complaint. It may have taken time for the complaint to be recorded as the police have to make inquiries.
On the subject of her complaint,Zinta wrote,Theft,Fraud and Forgery is not a civil matter! It is a criminal offence. I dont understand why it is taking so long to file an FIR?
Addl CP (West) Region Amitabh Gupta said,Zinta had come with a complaint about some property dispute between her and one of the Amrohi brothers which is technically a civil dispute. However,we are conducting further inquiries and if we see any grounds for any criminal complaint, further action will be taken accordingly.
