Two AFMC final year cadets drown in pool

Two final year MBBS cadets from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) drowned in the college swimming pool at around Saturday midnight.

Two final year MBBS cadets from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) drowned in the college swimming pool at around Saturday midnight.

An AFMC release said,“Two cadets of 2007-12 batch met with a tragic end on the intervening night of June 18 and 19 after drowning in the campus’ swimming pool. Cadets Gautam Mishra,22 from Kanpur,UP,and Naresh Bansal,23,from Bathinda,Punjab entered the pool unauthorised around midnight and accidentally drowned. Another cadet accompanying them alerted AFMC authorities…”

The release stated that rescue efforts could not save them. “However,the two young bright cadets could not be saved despite best possible efforts of the medical college. Wanavadi police authorities,who visited the accident site immediately after receiving information,have begun investigations. Defence authorities have started investigations separately… “

Police said the cadets had consumed alcohol. AFMC authorities said it would be confirmed only after post-mortem on Monday.

Bajirao Mohite,senior police inspector,Wanavadi police station,said,“We got a call at around 2.45. By then the two were taken out of the pool. Our inquiry revealed the two along with their friend Anurag Gupta consumed alcohol in Gupta’s room. Then they went to the swimming pool. As the doors were closed,they scaled the fence to enter the pool area. The two could not swim and started to drown. Gupta called other cadets who took them out and rushed them to Command Hospital. They were declared dead there. We have registered a case of accidental death.”

Asked to verify whether they had consumed alcohol,AFMC spokesperson,Colonel Arindam Chatterjee,said, “We will not be able to confirm it as autopsy is yet to be done. The post-mortem will be on Monday.” Police said relatives of the two students were expected to reach Pune on Monday. The bodies will be handed over to them after autopsy.

Man falls into gorge,dies

A man died after falling into a gorge from a train on the way to Pune from Mumbai on Saturday evening. The body of Preetam Borathe of Dapodi was taken out of the 300-foot gorge near Amrutanjan bridge by a group of trekkers .
