Temperature rise brings frequent powercuts

With a sudden rise in temperature during the past three days that has led to increase in the electricity demand,the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has decided to cut off power to power intensive units like induction furnaces and steel rolling mills in the state for two days in a week. PSPCL has also decided to one day compulsory weekly power cut for the industry. Apart from this about,two hours power cut is being imposed in residential areas from Thursday. According to the PSPCL,the last three days have witnessed the power demand rising to 1270 Lakh Units (LUs) against the available 1170 LUs. Moroever,the corporation has not made any changes to the six hours of dedicated power supply to agriculture farms. “We have increased power cuts in industrial areas so as to give relief to domestic consumers at large,” said S K Gupta,Deputy Chief Engineer,Ludhiana.

Man opens fire at PSPCL staff,one dies

A resident of Manakwala village in Ferozepur district shot dead a person working for PSPCL and critically injured another on Friday after they shifted the electric meter of his house to prevent incidents of power theft. Gurmail Singh,who was irked by the PSPCL’s decision to shift the metre on the outside wall of his house,shot Kaka Singh with his licensed revolver. While Kaka died on the spot,his colleague Lakhbir Singh is fighting for his life at Civil Hospital,Zira.
