A Zirakpur resident died after the scooter he was driving was hit by a school bus of St. Xaviers School,Sector 44,on Wednesday.
The accident took place at the Hallomajra traffic signal in the morning.
As usual,the school bus started from Panchkula in the morning and went to the Industrial Area to pick up students. Subsequently,it headed towards Ram Darbar.
When it reached the Hallomajra traffic signal,it hit the victims scooter,which was coming from the Zirakpur side.
An eyewitness said,the school bus did not stop at the traffic signal,and that the victim lost balance and fell on the road. Then the rear wheels of the bus ran over him.
Krishan Das,who sustained serious head injuries,was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 42,where he was declared dead on arrival.
Das,a helper-cum-security guard at the Punjab Markfed office,Sector 35,was going to office when the accident took place.
After the mishap,the bus driver fled the spot,leaving behind students in the bus. After some time,another bus was called to take students to the school.
Later,the accused driver,Mohali-resident Randhir Singh,was nabbed,the police said. The bus has been impounded.
The police said Das (48) is survived by his wife and two sons.
A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered in the Sector-31 police station.
