Having started playing the womens circuit this year, 18-year-old Rishika Sunkara of Delhi has had some tough draws, running into top seeds, circuit veterans, eventual semifinalists and finalists more often than not in the initial phase. Though a second round loss is her best result till date, she took most of her matches to three sets and gave a scare to many of her highly rated opponents. On Monday she won her first round match against Anastasia Prenko 6-3 6-3,a player she was playing for the fourth time and confident of a good result.
I had beaten her thrice before so I had a little edge going into the match, Rishika says.
However Rishikas luck hasnt changed. She is likely to run into third seed Mexican Nadia Abdala in the second round,in a rematch of the last weeks tournaments second round where Rishika had gone down in three sets. There is no one flaw you can look to dominate in her game. She is 6 2,very athletic, hits well but her height also hampers her movement. I have to take it point by point, she says.
Just an hour after she won her singles,Rishika stepped on to the court to win her doubles match as well, partnering Nova Patel. There were some slight hiccups in the start when they had a chance to break but couldnt convert and when Rishika faced a break point on her serve but the rest was smooth sailing as they won 6-2 6-1 against Vaniya Dangwal and Smriti Joon.
