Porcupine intrudes into Vadodara residential colony, foresters take it easy

The alleged lethargy of Social Forestry Division of Vadodara Forest Department came to the fore on Saturday in handling a wildlife rescue call frantically made by animal activists about presence of a porcupine in Siddharth Bungalows on the New VIP road.

The alleged lethargy of Social Forestry Division of Vadodara Forest Department came to the fore on Saturday in handling a wildlife rescue call frantically made by animal activists about presence of a porcupine in Siddharth Bungalows on the New VIP road.

While none of the concerned forest officials allegedly picked up the calls made by the activists, they eventually sent a boy, working for the forest department on contract basis,to catch the porcupine, said activist Rakesh Vadhwana.

“Around 6 am,the residents of Siddharth Bungalows found a porcupine sitting in a corner of a vacant house in the colony. They closed the compound gate so that the animal does not escape and called us up around 8 am. We we rushed to the spot and,as per protocol,I had called up forest officials but they did not pick up the call. Eventually,I got in touch with the person who is working on contract basis for the forest department who came to the spot around 9.45 and after a bit of struggle, the animal was trapped in a box,” said Vadhwana.

While Vadodara District Forest Officer M B Patel could not be contacted,Round Forester Ashok Pandya said,“We had sent our staff to handle the call and the porcupine was successfully trapped. We often get prank calls and that is why we try to ensure whether the call is genuine, but we do attend to every call.”
