As the model code of conduct has come into operation in the wake of the Lok Sabha elections, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has put its ambitious Gomti Riverfront Development Project on the hold.
The project aims to beautify the course of the river passing through the city. The LDA has postponed the bidding process for hiring consultants for the project until the elections get over in May. During elections,no work will be conducted. The LDA was supposed to invite bids for consultants as soon as possible, but now it will be done only after the elections, LDA Vice-Chairman Mukesh Kumar Meshram said.
In a meeting held on February 28,LDA Board members had decided to go ahead with the project and directed the officials to hire consultants. The authorities had decided to invite bids. Within a week after the meeting, elections were announced and the model code of conduct was enforced. So,the bidding has been postponed, said an official.
During the meeting, officials of the Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) had made a presentation of the work they were doing for the development of river Sabaramati in Gujarat. After conducting a survey of the 28-km stretch of Gomti in Lucknow,SRFDCL consultants had said the river has better physiographic conditions than any other river in the country.
The LDA Board has already given its nod for the constitution of a Gomti Front Development Company to execute and maintain the project. The focus is to revive Gomti, aimed at enhancing the functional and scenic heritage of the river. Markets, gardens, recreational centres, eateries and real estate will also be developed along Gomti.
LDA to develop green areas
The LDA will seek a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the LMC to develop green areas along the roads, canals and other areas in the city. The LDA has decided to identify sites on roads and canals where green area could be developed. For example, areas around Kukrail nullah could be one site. Normally,it is job of the LMC to develop such areas, but nothing has been done so far. So,LDA will take NoC from LMC to complete this task, said LDA Vice-Chairman.
