With Assembly elections in Rajasthan and Delhi round the corner and Lok Sabha elections not far away, the Congress on Friday began an exercise to woo the influential Jat community, which is reportedly upset with the government for not including the Jats in the OBC quota list.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and his Delhi counterpart Sheila Dikshit made an appearance at a conclave in Delhi, organised by the All India Jat Mahasabha, and promised the community that their demand would be met.

Dikshit claimed that Delhi was the first state to grant OBC status to the community, enabling them to avail benefits of OBC reservation in government services. “The demand was made two years ago and we implemented it within two months. Our efforts are on to stand shoulder to shoulder with you and fight so that the Central government also accepts the demand for Jat reservation,” she said.

She encouraged Jat leaders to draft a proposal for land to build a Jat Bhawan in the Capital. She assured them help in getting it passed by the DDA.

Highlighting that the Jat community was granted reservations in his state,Hooda prompted the Centre to take the same step. “85-90 per cent of the work has been done. A decision can be expected soon,” he said.

Besides Dikshit and Hooda, the convention was also attended by Congress leader Birender Singh,Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary and Union Minister Ajit Singh, whose RLD’s core support base is the Jat community. Ajit Singh assured the community that “with elections near, you will definitely hear some announcements from the government soon”.

President of the Mahasabha, former Punjab Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Amarinder Singh said every effort should be made to include Jats in the OBC list and provide them job reservation.
