Number Plate Readers and active tracking to make roads safer
Even as Chandigarh continues to have a poor Close Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance,Panchkula will soon be installing over 90 high tech Automatic Number Plate Readers (ANPR)and CCTV cameras to upgrade its outdoor surveillance system.
Unlike Chandigarh where the CCTVs are static, the CCTV in Panchkula can be panned, tilted and zoomed, which will help the police in keeping an eye on the city. The ANPR can capture the image of the moving vehicle and also the driver.
The CCTV and ANPR will be installed,by VMC – a Hyderabad-based company,at the various strategic places and border areas of Panchkula that have already been identified by the police. The company has already started the ground work for installation and will also take care of their maintenance.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police,Panchkula,Maneesh Chaudhary said that they have taken into consideration the fact that in Chandigarh, the CCTV that were installed had not been working properly.
We have kept these things in mind and the company has assured us that outdoor surveillance will not face any problems like the ones in Chandigarh, Chaudhary said.
The Chandigarh administration had installed 20 static CCTV at key points of the city last year and at the time they also had plans to expand the network. While no expansion took place, the installed cameras failed to capture traffic violations during the night or at the time when the sun light is facing the cameras.
Panchkula police too had installed five CCTV cameras few years ago,but due to non-maintenance they had become non-functional.
According to Panchkula police sources, the project costing over Rs 1 crore will connect the cameras through a software and which will immediately alert the police about the movement of a stolen or any vehicle used for criminal activity.
When any vehicle involved in an accident or crime is caught on the ANPR,an auto alert will be generated through the software and Police Control Room (PCR) will get an instant message. The camera will be able to capture the face of the driver. When any other camera spots the car,it will automatically inform the Police Control Room, a police officer said.
