Based on the feedback received from students, city colleges introduce short-trem courses on the development of soft skills and communication skills from the coming academic session simultaneously with the mainstream academic programme.

The analysis of recent feedback forms filled by students of government colleges revealed that majority of them complained about the lack of soft skill courses in colleges and suggested to add these in the curriculum. Taking cue from the suggestion, the UT Department of Higher Education not only decided to add these short-term courses but also made them compulsory for every student to undertake in the first year of college; irrespective of the stream.

“The feedback was invited from students to decide about important decisions including new courses, placement opportunities, how the college could have done better to facilitate higher studies, career development and overall personality development, etc. Of the total forms received from students, more than 50 per cent suggested the introduction of soft skill courses,” said Director Higher Education Ajoy Sharma.

The skills would concentrate on enabling students to communicate with others, following appropriate behaviour, developing desirable attitude to various aspects of life and preparing them to meet challenges.

A course designed especially for the purpose will be introduced from August 1 to November 30 every year. This will be a six-hour session a week,of which four hours devoted for communication skills and personality development and two hours for basic computer skills. This will be followed in second year too,as every second- year student will undergo personality profiling.

Sharma said besides the emphasis on soft skills, functioning of campus placement cells was another major concern. “The department has worked on this issue too. An active placement cell would be formed in every city college with equal participation of students. The cell would work considering the demand of human resource from various industries,” added Sharma.
