A show of strength marked the last day of campaigning at the Sector-25 Rally Ground where Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav addressed a gathering in support of party candidate Haffiz Anwar-ul-Haq.

Thousands of people started flooding the ground since 9 am on Monday morning as Lalu was expected to reach the venue at 10 am. The Union railway minister made his entry only an hour late as his chartered flight landed in Chandigarh around 10.40 am.

The residents were not disappointed as Lalu slammed his rivals, including Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, with his usual witticisms.

Praising Anwar-ul-Haq,Lalu appealed to the gathering to support the RJD and bring about a change in the city. “It is my first visit to Chandigarh and I am happy to see the crowd’s response,” said Lalu.

Haffiz,in his address, not only slammed his opponents — the three veterans Pawan Kumar Bansal (Congress),Satya Pal Jain (BJP) and Harmohan Dhawan (BSP) — but also announced that the time has come for the trio to retire in the interest of city residents.

Using his typical Bihari slang,he appealed to the audience to vote in his favour and bring prosperity to their homes. Haffiz added: “These MPs,who begged for your votes, never opened their doors to you when you were in trouble; I assure you that my house will always remain open for all at all hours.”

Appreciating the efforts of his supporters,Haffiz said: “I thank you all for being here. Such a show of strength was not seen even when Sonia Gandhi or Mayawati addressed rallies in the city. This sends a clear message that the RJD is united and will definitely win.” This is the first time that the RJD has fielded a candidate from the Chandigarh Parliamentary constituency.
