The Punjab health contractual employees association of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM),staged a dharna on the road opposite Guru Nanak Dev Engineering (GNE) college. The employees are demanding the immediate notification of their demands,which includes the assurance of a regular job.
The original venue of the protest was Ladhowal,where the employees planned to block GT road,but police arrangements forced them to change the venue of protest to GNE road. More than 40 employees also climbed up on a water tank.
Gurjit Singh,President of the Association said: The Chief Minister has agreed to our demands a number of times,but till date no notification has been given. More than 7,000 employees are on contract and are posted in civil hospitals,primary health centres and community health centres. They are working as nurses,field staff and clerical staff. Appointment of employees started from 2002 on a contract basis and the salary is in the range of Rs 8,000-12,000. Many employees have left the jobs in-between. Singh added the new health minister,Satpal Gosain,had told them that he will call a meeting in this context soon,but nothing has happened till date.
