Mayor Anu Chatraths decision to suspend the House Meeting of the Municipal Corporation on Friday over the issue of BSP councillor Raj Kumari Mishra and her husband being beaten up at the Industrial Area police station a few days ago,did not go down well with many councillors.
They said a discussion on the law and order situation should have taken place instead of a suspension.
The House Meeting lasted for a couple of minutes. Matters like cement scam, garbage processing plant and several other development issues were slated for discussion today. A decision on the leave application of Congress councillor Devinder Singh Babla, who is in jail, also had to be taken.
Councillor Dr A P Sanwaria said the councillors should have been given a chance to put across their views. Without listening to the councillors or discussing the issue of law and order the House was suspended. Instead, the House should have been recalled after a brief interval, he said.
Similar views were echoed by councillor M P S Chawla. He said the incident was condemnable and they supported Mishra, but discussion on development issues should have taken place.
Some hinted the House was avoiding a discussion on issues like the cement scam. Others hinted at the stage being set for the elections to the civic body scheduled next year.
Former Mayor and Congress leader Subhash Chawla said the entire incident had political overtones.
Councillor Pallav Mukherjee said it was sheer wastage of public money as there was no need of suspending the House.
However, there were some who stated that since a councillor was in trouble there was a need for everyone to get together and extend support.
Councillor Kamlesh said if the safety of a councillor could not be ensured there was no hope for the common people. Mishra and her family members were beaten up at a police station and the police were mute spectators. This is the way a councillor was treated. There is a need for councillors to stand together on the issue, she said.
