Ninety five per cent of the students who fail the first year of the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA I) course make the switch to other courses.
Realising that the BBA I course is not their cup of tea after the results are declared, merely five percent of the whopping 50 per cent failing students repeat the course.
While a majority return to their original subjects opted in Class XII like Arts or Vocational, others apply for re-evaluation.
Most city colleges do not accept applications for admission from those who have failed the same course previously. Thus students are left with no option but to complete these courses through private colleges on the citys outskirts or through other universities.
Manjit Brar, principal of Government College of Commerce and Business Administration,Sector 42 said,As BBA is not offered as a correspondence and private course, the students do not have any option but to either change their stream or apply for re-evaluation. But merely five percent of those who could not clear their first year pursue this course. Applying for re-evaluation three or more than three subjects, they hope that they would be able to clear at least one and get into compartment.
While the BBA teaching staff at DAV College said that most of the students who are rarely serious in pursuing their studies just leave and get into their fathers business or do stuff other than studies. Even the high fee as compared to other courses does not prove as a force for students to study. They are hardly bothered about the expenses being incurred by their parents on their fees, said a commerce professor of the college.
As of this year, the pass percentage of BBA I declined from 56 to 40 per cent, there have been series of meetings between different college authorities and officials of the Panjab University. Suggestions have been proposed in bringing about changes in the admission criteria that would help to filter out students who will be unable to cope with the BBA course structure.
A very small number of students who were unable to complete the course were inducted into companies like J W Marriott,ICICI Bank and some even made it to some of the reputed management institutes in the region.
