Montek advocates reforms in labour laws

The two-day All India Law Congress was inaugurated at the Department of Laws,Panjab University,on Saturday. Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia,deputy chairman of the Planning Commission,also graced the occasion.

The topic of this year’s Congress is ‘Law as a facilitator of socio-economic reforms in the present decade’.

Dr Ahluwalia spoke extensively on the issues where law is forced to remain a mute spectator.

He said there was a need to have a time-bound inquiry and efforts are required to dispose of the pending cases.

Ahluwalia also highlighted the huge number of vacancies in the judiciary and stated that some posts are vacant for more than a decade now.

Citing an example of the Uttar Pradesh High Court,he said nearly 50 per cent cases are pending there.

Speaking on the reforms in labour laws,the Planning Commission deputy chairman said companies would be allowed to set up operations only at places where the law and order is peaceful.

Speaking on the hot topic of inflation,Ahluwalia said the situation would soon be brought under control and the prices of essential commodities will also decrease.

Nearly 500 delegates have already registered and around 200 abstracts received. Professors from various universities and senior advocates and judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court will present papers at the Congress.

Justice G S Singhvi from the Supreme Court gave the inaugural address while Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court,Mukul Mudgal,spoke about the required amendments in labour laws.
