For the first time in weeks,curfew was relaxed on Saturday in several pockets of uptown Srinagar city.
The clampdown,however,remains on downtown Srinagar and rural Kashmir. Inspector General of Police,Kashmir Range,Farooq Ahmad said they have lifted the curfew in areas under the following police stations Rajbagh,Kothibagh,Harwan,Nishat,Panthchowk,Shergari,Mushibagh and Karan Nagar.
A large procession was taken out in Chanpora after curfew was relaxed. This uptown city area has remained volatile for some time now.
Meanwhile,eighteen-year-old Rameez Raja,who was critically wounded when police opened fire on a protest march at Warpora village in Sopore on Friday,died on Saturday at the Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS).
He was a student of Class X11. Four more were wounded at the firing.
Eyewitness to the incident Manzoor Ahmed told Express Online: After offering the Friday prayers,the protestors staged a peaceful sit-in close to the police post. The police opened fire on the group.
Ahmad said the villagers had resorted to stone-pelting in the last three weeks but had decided to heed Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelanis call for a peaceful sit-in.
