Khalsa College refunds students forced to take up IT course

In a relief to students of G N Khalsa College Matunga,the insititute has refunded the fee paid by students towards an IT course that they were “forced” to take up. Newsline had reported that first year BSc (IT) students were upset at being forced to enroll for a course in networking. The course is offered by the college and is not part of the university syllabus.

On Thursday,college authorities refunded the fees and assured students that they will not be forced to enroll for the course. “I instructed the head of BSc IT Department not to force any student to opt for the course. We are yet to decide the fee structure for the course. Students have been refunded,” Director of Khalsa College Dr Ajit Singh said.

Last week,students had alleged that the head of department,BSc (IT),had told them that they will have to enroll for the course as it will be help them in placements. The students had reported the matter to the Mumbai University students’ grievance cell too.

The students were asked to pay Rs 12,000. “The HOD asked us to pay Rs 4,000 now,another 4000 in May and the remaining after Diwali. This is a private course and not affiliated to Mumbai University. The college cannot force us to take it,” said a student. “We were even threatened that our results would be withheld if we do not enroll for the course,” another students said.
