Annoyed with the Centre’s rejection of the rice supplied by Punjab, the state government has advised farmers of Punjab and neighbouring states not to sow PAU-201 variety of paddy.

Inaugurating a Kisan Mela organised by Punjab Young Farmers Association at Rakhra on Saturday,Punjab Agriculture Minister Sucha Singh Langah exhorted farmers not to sow PAU-201 variety as the Centre had declined to accept its rice despite efforts by Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal for relaxation of damage specifications.

He said it was in the interests of Punjab to adopt Pusa-44 variety as it needed less water and took fewer days to ripen.

Soon after, farmers flocked to buy seeds of the variety at various stalls. Its seeds were exhausted in an hour and several farmers had to return disappointed. Great rush was also reported for buying the seeds of Pusa Basmati-6 (Pusa 1460),which was an improvement over Pusa Basmati-1121 both in regard to yield and grain quality. Langah advised farmers to adopt new technologies and abandon rice-wheat rotation to restore fertility of soil and save water.

The association also honoured an outstanding scientist H S Gupta,Director Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI),by conferring him the Amrik Singh Cheema Award.

Farmers’ unions to hold protest week
Kisan unions protesting against the murder of farmer leader Sadhu Singh Takhtupura and the Khanna Chamiara incident,in which police have opened fire on farmers, have announced that they would intensify their stir against the SAD-BJP government. Sukhdev Singh Kokri, general secretary Bhartiay Kissan Union (Ugrahan),said,“During this week we will hold rallies at village level and burn effigies of the state government.
