Getting Booked

We always knew Sonali Kulkarni was one cool girl! So,we aren’t surprised that the actress has named her first book So Kool. It is a compilation of columns that she wrote between 2006 and 2008 as guest editor of Viva,a supplement of Loksatta, the Indian Express Group’s Marathi daily. “The column was called So Kool, which plays on the abbreviation of my name and also symbolises my attitude,” says Kulkarni.

The book contains Kulkarni’s views on issues ranging from domestic violence to floods to humour. “There are 101 articles. I have re-written most of these articles and re-packaged them so that they are relevant today,” he says. The book is slated to be launched by Rajhans Publishers next month.

Kulkarni says she’s always had a flair for writing and expressing herself in her mother tongue Marathi came easily to her. “Ever since I was in college,I have been writing poems and short stories as a hobby,” says the 35-year-old actress, who will be seen on screen next month in Mazhar Kamran’s Mohandas, where she plays a print journalist from Delhi.

Her favourite article in the book is the one which she wrote after the suicide of model-actor Kuldeep Randhawa. “It received lot of critical appreciation from the Marathi readers. My only regret is that the book will be available only to Marathi readers. I hope my publishers launch an English version,” she says. Films, however, remain her first love. “I am an actor by profession and prefer to keep it that way. Writing will happen if there is a subject that interests me,” she says.
