The city seems to be in a festive mood ahead of the arrival of the Queens Baton for Commonwealth Games in India via Attari Border on June 25. A large number of local residents and schoolchildren took part in a marathon,flagged off by BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu in the presence of Shera,the official mascot of the Games.
Dignitaries from all over the world will descend on the city to welcome the baton next week. After travelling over 70 countries,the baton will enter India around 9.30 am from Pakistan and take a tour of the entire country to finally reach Delhi for the 19th Commonwealth Games to be held in October.
Several sports personalities would be present and a cultural extravaganza would be organised,said Amritsar Deputy Commissioner K S Pannu,adding that the torch would be received by the office-bearers of Indian Olympic Association in the presence of Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. Pakistan Olympic Association officials will hand over the baton to the Indian authorities amid tight security. The Department of Posts will release a special stamp on the occasion.
The state government,said Pannu,would organise a mega cultural event and the baton would be brought to the city,35 km from Attari,amid much fanfare. Accompanied by official mascot Shera,the torch will be taken to the Golden Temple and Durgiana Temple before being placed at the Ram Bagh gardens for public view.
On June 26,the baton will leave the city for Jalandhar and then to Ludhiana,from where it will go to Chandigarh,Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
