Discoms say have power, but cuts on

Even as Delhi continues to draw lesser power than allotted to it from the Northern Grid,an indication that the Capital has enough power for its needs, long power-cuts have been plaguing the city.

On Monday, power was cut off in various pockets of Janakpuri,West Delhi,at 7 am only to be restored five hours later at 12 noon. The area is supplied by the power distribution company (discom) BSES.

The local area discom officials initially said the power-cut was due to the ‘jumper’ — a technical equipment that connects the transformer to main power cables — developed a snag. Later, they claimed a Delhi Transco sub-station had developed a fault leading to the power-cut.

Of late, most cuts have been blamed either on technical faults or the Delhi Transco.

As far as local faults in a discom’s network go,it is the discom’s responsibility to fix it. “The chief minister has taken this issue up with the discoms since most power-cuts these days seem to be resulting from technical breakdowns. While these breakdowns may be inevitable, the fact that discoms are taking hours to fix them is a clear indication that their response is far from efficient,” said a senior Power department official.

“The discoms’ efforts in arranging sufficient power for the people this year has been exemplary, but power-cuts continue because of these technical problems. Naturally, consumers do not care what is causing the power-cuts,therefore,there have been complaints at various forums,” the official added.

He also said most consumers are willing to accept power-cuts up to an hour, but not longer.
