The Chandigarh Administration is all set to launch 20 AC buses on long routes by July end.

The Chandigarh Administration is all set to launch 20 AC buses on long routes by July end.

Chennai-based Ashok Leyland has been allotted the tender to make the vehicle chassis while three Dera Bassi companies have applied for manufacturing the AC buses.

Some of the proposed routes are Chandigarh-Delhi,Chandigarh-Dharamshala and Chandigarh-Shimla.

Though the final routes are yet to be finalised, the fares would be more or less at par with what other roadways charge.

Transport Secretary Ram Niwas said: “We are all set to launch 20 AC buses for different destinations and based on the response we shall further increase the fleet.”

The bus design will be semi-low floor with approximately 50 seats and a Euro III engine. The city has 34 mini buses plying locally but this is the first step by the Administration to have AC buses for long routes as well.

Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) Director M L Sharma said: “These buses would be run by CTU on popular routes which witness heavy rush. We expect to generate huge revenue with the venture. To begin with,we are procuring 20 buses but we may increase the fleet depending on the demand.”
