B J Medical College in Ahmedabad to get AIIMS status

The B J Medical College in Ahmedabad is among six such institutions in the country that will be upgraded on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi.

Plans are afoot to refurbish infrastructure at the 100-year-old hospital; state govt sanctions Rs 100 crore

The B J Medical College in Ahmedabad is among six such institutions in the country that will be upgraded on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS),New Delhi. State Health and Family Welfare authorities say that the college will be spruced up and retrofitted over the next four years.

Rajesh Kishore,Principal Secretary,Health and Family Welfare Department,told The Indian Express: “The timeline of the project is around four years. For this year,nearly Rs 100 crore has already been sanctioned by the state. Our department has been informed that the Centre has sanctioned around Rs 1,000 crore,but we are yet to know the details.”

The state government will be sanctioning Rs 911 crore for the work,which will be done in phases. A master plan is being made by the government to refurbish the college’s 100-year-old infrastructure,which will also include a new super-specialty hospital.

Kishore added: “A group of experts are now preparing a master plan to refurbish the B J Medical College and the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Once the plan is finalised for individual projects,the tendering will be done right from the architectural plan to infrastructure development,which include sprucing up the labs,classrooms and wards. Last year,the state government had sanctioned funds for the development of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.”

As a part of the state government project,hospital authorities said there is a requirement of a new hospital with B J Medical College for further research in the super-specialty streams such as Nephrology and Neurology. “The college is also planning to start new courses such as immuno haematology,family medicine,gastro medicine and newer medicine. The plan also includes refurbishing the drainage,electricity supply and treatment of biomedical waste,” said a hospital official. This year,a new postgraduate course in Biochemistry will also be introduced,he added.
